Rear Fuel Tank for a '68 - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I'm interested in moving the gas tank to the rear of my '68. I know that some of the suppliers like Brothers offer a slick poly set-up, but I'm cheap. What about installing a tank from a 73+ Sub or Blazer? Will it work?

That's what I just did.Mine's from a 77 blazer and it fits in great. You will probably have to knock out your spare tire crossmember though.

Do you have a long or short bed p/u?
I found that a blazer tank (25gal) would
not fit in my short bed behind the rear
axle...measured approx 28x28...make sure
you take very good measurements before you
buy.

PS: The poly tanks fit great if you have
a short bed.

I have a 31 gallon 86 Blazer tank in my stepside/ with skid plate. Newer than a 86 is FI. Ya cant notice it unless you are looking.

I just installed my 79 burb tank today and it fit nice. I moved the rear crossmember to the back of the frame and made my own straps.

u can get the straps and orginal felt from raybucks. not sure if thats spelled right. they also have sending units. they are online.

Then its safe to assume if you have a Reese hitch welded to the frame you are stuck with one or the other hitch & tank in the cab or tank under the bed & no hitch...??? What does everyone do that pulls a trailer??

Not familiar with Reese hitches, but I'm running with a relocated tank and also have a Draw-Tite hitch, so I know it can be done... It was a straight forward installation with plenty of room for both.

Anybody have pics of such a big tank installed into a short bed. I know for a
fact the 'spare tire crossemember' needs to
be removed...but are you guys removing the
rear most cross-member too? That to me
seems like it would leave the tank 'very'
exposed in a rear end accident. But there
is only approx 20" between the rear most
crossmember and the crossmember that the
track-arm is attached to. PICS would be
great. I have a 31gal tank from an '89
suburban, that I would love to install, but
it just doesnt measure up. I also want to
put on a step bumper... but if i mount this
tank which is 28x28x13deep...it would go the

I removeed my rear coross member and made a new one out of angle iron. then welded a smaller piece to the backside of the new cross to bolt the tank straps and skid plate to. basically did the same to the front with angle iron. both of the pieces of angle iron lay flush with the top side of the frame. I do have a reciever hitch bolted to the bottom of my frame. i will try to figure out this new scanner i have and post some pics this week.

Yeah, not a GM, but I love it. 1969 GMC 32,000 - fix, drive, relax, fix... 2019 BMW R1250 GSA - Yahoooooooo 1979 Honda GL 1000 - retro touring at its best. Past: '05 Sierra 4x4 - Had 270,000 KM and running well when it was written-off by a stop sign runner. '94 F-150 from the "F word" company. I'll admit it...good truck. Sold what was left of it for $800 to a guy who came to pick it up at 11:00 PM with cash in hand. Hmm. '79 Sierra Grande (Black) organ donor - perfect rebuildable 4-bolt 350 and a good TH350. '76 Sierra Grande (Orange) - hate isn't too strong a word. Kid who bought it turned it into a hot rod. '68 C-10 R.I.P. - Dad's old truck...too far gone to resurrect. '59 C-50 - with hoist. Truck is gone, wife isn't. Nuff said.
