Electrical issue, 62 c10

So yesterday i went out to the garage and decided to fire up the truck. Reached in as i normally do, turned the key.... one click, then everything was completely dead... no lights, no radio, nothing. Unhooked the battery, to check for corrosion, all was good, reconnected it. Had power again. Tried starting it again... one click and all dead again. I replaced the positive cable.... no change. What would cause this? Bad solenoid? Wiring issues? Thanks

Possibly a shorted cell in the battery. It works under a light load but not a heavy one.

Still reads 12.6v on the volt meter. Headlights still shine bright.

Re: Electrical issue, 62 c10

The solenoid is what's clicking, so it's trying at least. The solenoid switches (turns on/off) the starter and throws the starter drive (Bendix) out to engage the flywheel/flexplate. Those aren't happening. You can jump from the big + terminal to the S-terminal to see if that helps. If it does, the solenoid isn't able to draw enough current to operate.

Measure the voltage to ground (block) at the S-terminal when the key is in the start position. Clean both battery terminals, cable terminals at both ends, and make sure the big ground cable goes to the block.

A shorted cell will make a battery do weird things. Ask me how I know.
If it were mine the next thing I would do would be to have the battery tested as a step in the process of elimination.
Any O'Reilly's, etc will do it free of charge.

Re: Electrical issue, 62 c10

I'll have the battery tested today after work. And I'll check all grounds and connections again.

Thanks

Will do! I also did a post on the HAMB... bad battery is the consensus there too... I hope it's that and nothing more major.

Thanks!

Re: Electrical issue, 62 c10

Took the battery to two different stores and it tested good.

Re: Electrical issue, 62 c10

Got her fired up. Not sure exactly what did it. I unplugged the main fire wall plug and cleaned the contacts with cleaner.... cleaned the wire where it hooks up to the horn relay and checked all the grounds. Dropped the batt back in and she started right up. Thanks all for the advice! JC62

Re: Electrical issue, 62 c10

If nothing works then its the horn Rely.its the one thing that runs the truck. They do go bad it sits on the core support next to the voltage regulator. Here is what it looks like. The wire should never be connected to the battery factory they did But Put it in a junction box where all your power leads go to they fixed the problem in 1967 --1972 here look

Remember to ground your hood these is not enough ground with your hood springs
