Question New and hoping to solve problems with 71 402 big block

We just bought a sweet looking 1972 Chevy C10...however all is not well.
Carb was junk replaced it. Found a broken valve spring replaced it but it's weird it doesn't seem to tighten down the same the others show more of the threads.
When you manually throttle the carb it wants to die. The engine was supposed to have had a rebuild in the 90,s but it doesn't look like a professional job.
Any thoughts.....This gal is just learning about all this engine stuff but enjoying reading thru some of the threads.
