Spare Tire "Pocket" ? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I'm thinking about doing a spare tire "pocket" if that is the right word for this? I have a trailer fender and backing plates to make it out of.

Has anyone here done one like this? I would have to cut out some of the bed support ribs but with the pocket welded in it should provide plenty of structural support I think? Of course I would have a drain hole. Any thoughts on this?

Someone else on the forum did exactly that, but I cannot seem to find the link I am sure I saved.

Anyway the member used a trailer fender and had a neat tie down/quick release strap on it.

Everyone needs a spare tire and one that's easy to get to yet out of the way.

Be sure to put a drain hole in the bottom and for obvious reasons, check the pressure of your spare on a regular basis.

If you go to the search this forum box click on advanced. Type in the word spare, and then click the little arrow thing so it opens and select titles only there are a bunch of spare tire placement threads

Put it on the passenger side of the bed for better weight distribution.

I put mine on the passenger side because my fuel tank fill utilizes the original fill location but to a rear tank. I also thought it was much safer removing the spare on the right side, shoulder side not road side.

Good job Boog! I know I have the thread saved as I re-read it last week but couldn't find it.

I would have gone for passenger side also, in fact, I wish my stepside spare tire was mounted there to keep me from getting run over during tire removal.

I think I would have put it to the rear of the axle though, just to be easier to get at.

Hmm....let me check something. Nah....not enough room for a similar mod on dad's GMC Canyon.

Thats very cool, I would do it. I think you'd want a drain hole and that you Linex it like it appears that they did in one of those photos.

Thank you all for the encouragement! I am not able to do all the fabricating myself so I am checking around town to see what local help I can get to put this together. I really like the look and will post pics if I can make this work!
