You may not smell the vapors, but go to heating it with welder they"ll come out of the pores. Or purge it with argon... So no O2 for combustion/explosion. Be safe. Jim.

Get it running first with what you have. Then spend money on it once you know engines good.

Close to my first thought when I saw that. Old gas tanks hold fumes no mater how long they have been "empty" Those fumes like to go BOOM or WOOSH when they ignite.

BEST ADVICE ON THE PAGE RIGHT THERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Before spending a bunch of money on the engine, see if it will actually fire up and run for long enough to build oil pressure and see if it is worth spending more money on the outside pieces before you continue.

It should fire up and run with not much more than you have in the first photo you posted if you either fill the the float bowl with gas from a small container. Then you could run it a bit longer running a fuel hose from the pump to a small can of gas. Then if it runs and sounds ok you do the happy dance and proceed to do what you planned to do. If it runs but knocks or has other internal engine issues you resort to plan B.

The get it running idea was the plan I have done more work on a few things here and there my wife was teasing me about never having it locked after I reminded her again that her 2011 gmc was unlocked so I finally changed the locks. Most the work has been engine and some elc. At this point I am waiting for Christmas aka UPS FED-EX guy to bring me a new wiring harness. False alarm thought I just got it turns out it was all the other parts except the harness it's on back order yea! Only reason I decided to replace harness it was just such a mess and would replace one or 5 and another one would get burnt or be found lacking and behind the dash is just a mess and there is not any great wiring diagrams for the gmc dash that I have found to know for sure I was getting things back where they belong there is about 1/2 dozen wires that don't go anywhere. Anyway will also probably order a replacement tank at some point. Thanks again.

short answer is no, the GMC engines were their own separate engines.. the 228, 248, 270 and 302 engines were actually a better design than the chevys of that time as they were full oilers, or so I have read.. go to www.patricksantiquecars.com for more info about the GMC engines... the gmcs were all the same block, just different bore and stroke combos...you could use anything to make your throttle linkage, also try national carb for a carb for your truck or you could send it to them to get it rebuilt

That's a governed carb. The governor closes the throttle if rpm is too high. Running non-governed carb, one might consider using electronic ignition with an rpm limiter.

If you have a tank of inert (or nearly inert) gas such as Nitrogen, Argon, or Steel Mix, you can release it into the tank to displace oxygen before welding or heating. It works. But as mentioned, small rust holes usually means more rust is hiding.

Okay yell not going to reuse this tank I will bite the bullet and get a new one. As far as the wiring harness I got its from brother's not sure if it will be a direct replacement or not but sold as such not listed for gmc or Chevy normally that tells me that it will work for both unless they just sell Chevy parts. Part of me wishes it was a Chevy would be easier to find some things like idk a grill....

The 270 originally came with a Zenith 28-228 1 barrel, and I just ordered mine because my rochester was nothing but problems

I also have a 1959 GMC with the 270 cubic inch engine. I can't locate the correct size oil filter cartridge. The cartridge size is 4 1/4 inch high by 3 5/8 inch diameter. Does any one have this size oil filter and can you give me a part number?
