torque converter/flexplate help

I went to bolt in my torque converter tonight and came across a problem.

My converter bolt holes do not match my flexplate holes...it appears as if my torque converter is "smaller" than the flexplate...I am about 1/2" away all the way around.

Are all chevy torque converter bolt patters the same size? Do all Chevy auto trans flexplates share the same bolt pattern?

The trans is a 700r4 and the engine is a 454.

Any help would be appreciated...thanks!

doesn't the fly wheel have 6 holes? on mine, there are 3 holes that dont reach, and 3 that do. try rotating the flywheel and see if the other holes match up.

the stock flexpalte will not have the bolt holes for a small converter. you will have to an aftermarket flexplate. make sure you get the right one. one piece seals have weights on the flexplate

I know for a fact I only have 3 bolt holes on the flexplate.

I just looked in Summit and there are "dual bolt pattern" flexplates...this must be what i need.

As far as the weights go...it appears that the flexplate in there has them...does this mean the engine is externally balanced? I don't see any mention in Summit on "1-piece seals" for their flexplates.

Am I heading in the right direction guys?

Thanks - Jeff

Thanks guys!

Wish I would have noticed this BEFORE I bolted the trans/engine together and placed it in the frame...oh well. At least the body is still off I guess.

just a note....most after market converters, have 7/16 bolts you may have to drill out the holes to 7/16 on the flex plate if you have one?????
