What Size Radiator for AD with Camaro Subframe

I'm trying to help a buddy who's doesn't use the internet much. His project is a 54 Chevy 3100 with a 4.8 LS with a 79 Trans Am subframe grafted on to the 3100 frame. Looking for any advice or recommendations for fitting a radiator for his set up. What size should he be looking for? I'd imagine the width would be the same as stock but the height would be a little less? Thanks for any help.

Steering box clearance may be an issue. When I have a situation like this I grab a tape measure and check ebay . I try to find the biggest radiator that will fit in the space that I have available . I also like to use two row , one inch or bigger core . I have one in my 42 ford with an s10 clip that looks way too small but cools a 450 horse smallblock with no problem . Measure carefully and research.

I still have the mustang down flow radiator from speedway. made a simple z bracket to bolt the radiator to the stock mount, then found a Derale shroud and fan that fits perfect to the radiator. Im at 760whp and did a 1300 mile race week, and it stayed under 200 degrees on a 105 degree day.

I have a 74 el camino subframe on mine.

Guys used to use those fulls size early Mustang radiators quite a bit back years ago as they were easy to get and not too spendy. They can be found in 20 or 24 inches wide depending on the Mustang application. I bought a used one from a guy for pocket change last year for an OT project with a small six in it.

77 C 30 dualie, 454, 4 speed with a 10 foot flatbed and hoist. It does the heavy work and hauls the projects around.

Thanks for the replies everybody. I'll have him take a look at the Mustang Radiators.

Re: What Size Radiator for AD with Camaro Subframe

I used a radiator for a 1969 Camaro, and I made my own core support from 1 inch square tube. 1969 Camaro has 2 different radiator width, one for big block, one for small. I used the small block size and did not have to cut the inner fenders. I was max width, and not as tall as stock radiator so it cleared the steering box. That radiator has brackets on the sides and mounted to my new core support easy.

We make bolt-in custom / conversion radiators for your application, right here in the USA using domestically sourced materials. Each radiator is built by hand and we use dual 1" thick cores, for a total core thickness of 2" (same overall thickness as a brass & copper 4-core). We have also made our radiators a little shorter for those that have custom configurations / less room than stock.

We NEVER charge extra for engine swap port locations, steam ports or built-in transmission coolers.

We are a Gold Vendor and support this forum, and offer a forum-member discount ($25 off a radiator / $20 off fan & shroud package). Retail price is $450, and members of this forum get a discounted price of $425.

Hit me up with any questions or for a quote.
