2005 oil gauge going crazy

okay we changed the oil on my moms 2005 chevy tahoe and now the gauge is going crazy when you drive it stays at 80 and when you press on the gas it drops all the way to zero and would stay there till we slow down like at red light then it will go back up, sometimes it starts beeping saying oil pressure too low, the motor has fresh oil and the oil level is good can anyone help me out on this I think my dad use 10w30 can that cause the pressure switch to go bad

Re: 2005 oil gauge going crazy

well it sounds liek you knocked some dirt into the pressure switch, it happends with age and mileage piece of dirt gets knocked loose and flows into the switch. i'd swap back to teh 5 w30 as That is what recommend by Chevy a heavier oil will cause increase wear and decrease in fuel mileage. Alot of people say they swap to a heavier oil cause of mileage to help keep the pressure up, i disagree with this seeing i service a lot fleet trucks ranging from the 4.3-8.1l gm motors some with 400k on them still running 5w30 and still reading 60 psi in oil pressure at idle
