Re: Rear end gear ratio

^^ yah, but if his grandkids are on the board, they'll be convinced they HAVE to remove the cover, cuz you know the original owner, the second owner, grandpa, aunt Betty and the local garage all changed the gears at one time regardless of any identification markings

just funnin', I love you guys!

Re: Rear end gear ratio

I typically suggest pulling the cover and having a look, plus the gear oil likely needs changed anyway. But that is not the answer most people want to hear. For some reason people seem to think there is some voodoo involved in working on a differential.

forestb, that is an original style Eaton HO32/33 differential.

Re: Rear end gear ratio

For the sake of all those that were helpful, it has a 3.73 gear ratio.

Out of curiosity how did you find the ratio? Remove the cover or rotate the tire?

Re: Rear end gear ratio

3.73 and 3.90 are real close when using the tire rotation. No 3.73 gears were ever made for the ho. good luck.

Re: Rear end gear ratio

I used the tire rotation technique. I think I will stay with what I have. From what I have been told it is a good drive around gear ratio.

Re: Rear end gear ratio

You're going to want to run some tall tires with those gears.

Re: Rear end gear ratio

I am currently running a fairly tall tire. 275/55R17 in the rear. Before everyone starts giving me advice (which I do appreciate), I have a small block 350 with a 700R4 trans. My rps are about 2000 at 70 mph.

Re: Rear end gear ratio

well if you are turning 2000 rpm at 70 mph then you might just have the rare gears .

your 275/55/17 = 28.91 dia / 700r4 / 70mph

3.90 = 2221 rpm @ 70mph
3.38 = 1925 rpm @ 70mph
