Re: Engine paint help

Booster bronze, engine orange - no it won't match the hinges. Hard to beat
an orange chevy engine block and heads.

Re: Engine paint help

Interesting question. I like the color you are using for the hinges. (What is the color called? May want to use that in mine.) The brake booster and master cylinder would look good as the same color. For the engine, a Chevy should always be orange.... Now take all that and a couple dollars to Starbucks and you can get some coffee. Basically saying it is your opinion that matters more than anyone else's. If you like a different color scheme then go that direction. Your truck and your money/time doing all this.

This winter I plan to blow my truck apart to rework everything, body, wiring, etc. Will paint it a darker blue with grey rally stripes. (To match the wheels) This grey you have for the hinges will match up very nice. Thanks for posting the pic...

Re: Engine paint help

I'll post a dissenting opinion.

Years ago I built a 1935 Ford pickup as a hot rod. Wanted everything under hood to match and be clean. I painted a GM crate motor with the same PPG paint I shot on the exterior of the truck. Painted everything. Just taped off for the intake manifold and exhaust manifolds. Installed old spark plugs, and pulled them before the paint completely dried.

I sold the truck some 8 or 9 years later. Paint on the engine was still hanging in there. Had a little discoloration from oil and such, but I feel it held up as well as engine paint.

I think the color combination of the hinges and the engine would be cool. You can paint the booster the same color if you choose, if you're not building a restoration, or since it's custom anyway, do whatever you want.

As you paint the engine, remember that prep work prior to paint, is essential just like it is on the rest of the vehicle. We cleaned (yes on a new engine),wiped with degreaser, epoxy primed, just like every other piece of metal on the truck.

I thought it was fine. Again, a dissenting opinion. Do what makes you happy, not what makes anybody else happy. Unless you're doing an exact restoration, doesn't really matter.

Good Luck!!!

Re: Engine paint help

Rhymes with Orange! Chevy Orange engine color looks best in my opinion.
I bought orange paint to repaint my Inline Six to bring back it's beauty.

Orange dude. Nothing else comes close.
I used the brush on por 15 engine paint in Chevy orange.
Laid down fantastic and looks great one year later
My engine was not pulled to paint though.

I vote for Chevy orange .When you start color matching everything it starts to look gawdy, nothing worse than when someone starts using red wire covers and red hoses and red wire ties , but it's yours do what makes you happy , I like chrome some guys hate it

Re: Engine paint help

Chevy Orange is my color.
The brake booster is going to oxidize over time.
I would paint the booster the same as the hinges.
Those hinges look good.
Just a suggestion,If you scuff the chrome off where the gasket goes,
Those chrome valve covers won't leak as bad.
Nice looking Shiny black Paint from what I see on the picture.

Re: Engine paint help

I wouldn't think of anything but orange for the engine block & heads for trucks of these years.

Heck I've even considered orange for my Edelbrock aluminum intake at one time or another.

rockyrivermark fer cryin' out loud you could eat off of that engine!

Nice hinges OP.

My 350 4 bolt has the 487 heads shaved with 2.02 valves with the old Edelbrock intake painted orange , Just old school sneaky . Lots of guys used to paint them to fool the competition on race night , They would pop the hood and only see abit of chrome and rams horn manifolds

Re: Engine paint help

Most guys don't have a great understanding of color or texture when it comes to appearance related stuff.
Having a detailed engine is an 'appearance related' thing....most guys want their engine compartments to attract attention.
So painting everything the same color will usually produce a camouflaged appearance......so it will be hard to notice individual items or accessories.

So, basically that means if you paint the engine black, etc the odds of it attracting much attention from most people will be reduced. You want to go with something that makes it 'stand out' from the crowd under the hood....and Chevy Orange is a good place to start.

Re: Engine paint help

What engine color if your whole truck is hot rod orange already and the engine bay already has orange firewall?

Paint it the same color as the truck , 2 different shades of orange would look cheap compared to the body and engine matching . At least with using orange .

It's like adding every stick on plastic emblem the auto parts stores sell to the side of your truck ...Don't do it
