Question 66 VIN Decoder

About to acquire a 66 C10. Opening VIN nubers are: C1546BXXXXXX. Anyone have link to a site with the decode info or able to provide the info? Have decoder for 67/68 and comparison goes to a C=4x2, ?, ?, ?, ?, B=built in Baltimore. Want to see if what is there is OEM or modified.

You are right on the first digit;
C= 2 wheel drive
15= 1/2 ton
4= Pickup
6= 1966
b= Baltimore

Longhorn, thanks for the information and confirmation. Side question. Where is the VIN plate located. I drive a 68 and it is in the door frame. On the 66 I'm looking at, I found a similar plate on the kick panel on the driver side, but it didn't have the VIN, just model codes and paint codes and other general info. Also found a paper glued on the glove box door. Don't remember if the VIN was on it, but it had OEM info also. Where else to look?

The vin plate should be on the left hand roof rail. That is what the book says. I have a 66 C30. My vin plate is gone. There is also some vin information on the frame which is stamped lightly and located usually in hard to get to locations. I believe one place is under the cab on the frame rail. I haven't checked for the one on my truck yet because it is unique enough that I'm positive it is what the title identified.

Thanks for the tip ddsmith. I go to pay for it and pick it up on Tuesday. I'll take another look then. Found a "Model" number info plate on the driver side kick panel, no VIN there. Also found a OEM sticker on the inside of the glove box door, still no VIN there either. I'm confident that it is what the owner says it is, but just want to confirm.

Sorry, I don't frequent this board much, I hang out on the '67-'72 one all the time.
Acording to my book, your vin plate should be on the left inner cowl.
Did you get your rig yet?

Thanks for the info. Brought it home last wednesday. Found the VIN plate, a little 1" by 3" plate, in the top of the cab door frame. There is a model number plate on the driver kick panel and a paper glued in the glove box lid that are still there. Owner also left me the original sales invoice from 66.

I mostly hang out on the CT boards. See your input there often. Any suggestions as to what prep work to do prior to starting it for the first time? Plan to replace/change out all the oil, plugs, wires, gas etc. Any thing else to consider?

For just cranking it up, not driving, I would do as you are saying there, but I would also prime the engine...to ensure good lube on start up. (You have bumped it over to make sure it isn't locked up, right??) After priming it, I would put on new cap rotor, plugs, wires, fuel filter, and a few gallons of real good gas. (high detergent, high octane) Then disable the coil, and crank it a few seconds, listning for death noises. If all sounds good, plug in the coil, and let her rip.
I would drain the oil after 15 min or so of running it, also, don't let it idle durring the first 15 min or so too, basicly, it's like braking in a new motor, but instead of machine shop stuff your flushing out, it is rust.
