max tire size on a stock 4x4

one of my tires finally gave out, the sidewall split open because they had sat for about 10 years tread was like new but they were very dry rotted and cracked - im surprised they lasted as long as they did. i got about 50 miles out of them.

currently it has 30x9.5x15 and they look small on the truck

whats the largest tire i can go with on the front with stock suspension

i dont have anything for a box on the rear right now and will probably get a flatbed for it so im not worried about the rear rubbing

Re: max tire size on a stock 4x4

Its a 3/4 ton but fitment is the same for a 1/2 ton...I had 33's on my 1/2 before I put a small lift on it.

Re: max tire size on a stock 4x4

Wheel width and offset will matter with 33/12.50 and stock suspension... get it wrong and it will rub. Years ago I trimmed the leading edge of the front fenders b/c 11.00-15 TrueTracs were rubbing.

i thought that looked like the most likely place it would rub - lucky mine is mostly rusted gone on the driver side - i can cut the passenger side to match and shouldnt have issue -

now all i need is about $800 to buy some tires

Re: max tire size on a stock 4x4

If you're curious what a lift would give for clearance, here's a 2" spring lift on the front end only. The back still has a 1 1/2" block in it, haven't gotten the 2" springs on yet.

EDIT: forgot to say the tires are 33 X 12.5

Re: max tire size on a stock 4x4

^ That's the exact stance my K20 has, with 2 1/2" front springs and rear add-a-leafs, and 33/12.50-16.5 tires on 9.75" wheels.

Re: max tire size on a stock 4x4

Yeah no lift and 33 12.5's. Bought this truck from the original owner, its all stock underneath...except the back has a set of those helper leafs. I believe those only come into play with an extra heavy load though.

My old, now oldirons, K10 had the same size tires, 33 12.5 with the same 2.5 inch lift as iwanta70 and Stockers. I think that's the perfect size lift if you are going to have one in a 4x4 that you actually use as a truck. Someday I hope to do that to the K20.

Not that it matters in this thread, but I had a 72 C20 that was actually lowered just a smidgen. It had 33 12.5 tires too...boy did they fill up the wheel well...lol.

Re: max tire size on a stock 4x4

I was just talking about this last night to a friend of mine, and I was saying that 31's would look nice, and probably be the biggest. Now I'm going to have to retract what I told him and show him that the right set of 33's will look even better.

CG I totally dig the way that truck looks; everything about it. If I do put a lift on mine it would only be the 2" like you said. I think any higher would just make it hard for a DD.

Re: max tire size on a stock 4x4

wheel width and backspacing are the key though, as stated.

I have 33x10.5 in this pic... I got a heck of a deal but I was planning on 32x11.5 or 33x12.5

these are the same with a 1.5" lift (add-a-leaf) and a 2WD rear axle (1.5" wider)

Re: max tire size on a stock 4x4

That does have three quarter ton inverted springs with an add a leaf on the front and 2 inch block on the back, half ton 72.
