Protection for metal on metal parts

What are people using for restoring moving parts that have metal on metal contact?

Specifically I am repairing my kick panel vents. The arm that actuates the vent is rusty. I am cleaning it up, but what can be done to protect it in the future. It has metal on metal contact both on the guide that bolts it to the cab, and where is hinges on the vent.

What are you options? I assume paint will just scrape up where there is metal on metal contact. My other thoughts were a coating of oil or wax?
