1970 Jimmy Heating and AC opinion needed - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Vehicle is a 1970

Jimmy with factory A/C. Has round ball vents in dash facing passengers. The vehicle is missing all components to A/C system except the heater boxes under dash and engine compartment. I don't plan on replacing the missing A/C components.

The dash has been brutally hacked up to install a CB and din style radio, which I am planning on returning to stock configuration.

I am in possession of a non-A/C dash front and components.

Questions are:
Should I replace entire dash front so it is non-A/C correct or just the radio section?

Would it be in my favor to leave the A/C ball vent section of the dash in place and somehow route vent tubes to these outlets for passenger comfort?

All opinions or ideas are wanted, thanks in advance.

Do you still have a solid cap on it or a soft top?

Then it's just as well you don't plan on getting the AC to work because it's useless with the soft top. IMO, I would replace the dash if it's as hacked up as you say. This way you'll be able to fix the CB damage as well as get rid of the A/C vent holes.I would also get rid of the A/C underdash and engine compartment box to clean things up and replace it with a non-AC heater box. You will have to clean up the firewall holes if you do this because A/C used different holes.

I was wondering if those a/c vent outlets on the dash would be nice for the heater/vent air. If not will go with full dash face replacement.

In a truck the heater lower vent and def. vents are more than enough for warmth but I too am in the process of switching to a non/ac box in my blazer and deciding what to do with the ac vents. the PO did a hack job on the engine comp ac box and gutted the internal box. lucky for me I have spare non ac boxes. just trying to figure out the a/c vents since there is only 2 holes to work with in the non a/c box...

I'm sure there is a "Y" splitter available somewhere. In my case, I was thinking it would be nice to have vents that I can direct the air towards the driver/passenger using the A/C dash vents. Maybe I'm thinking too much.

what does a non-a/c heater box look like compared to an a/c one?
