How do I tell if I have the 4 wheel or 2 wheel abs system without looking. I have 90 c2500 2wd 8 lug manual 4 speed. Heres my vin #1GCGC24K1LE241487 if somebody is able to tell by that. The haynes manual said theres two types RWAL and 4WAL.

Re: abs question

My thinking is that the 90 models only had RWAL. But, there's another post on this forum that lists a website that will tell you about your vehicle, based on the VIN. I'll see if I can link to that on this reply.

Re: abs question

I'm with ChevLoRay, I believe it is RWAL. I don't think 4 wheel was available on the trucks until 92 or so. I think the only option brake wise on this truck (2500) was vacuum or hydroboost power brakes. The vin won't do much for finding info like this. The RPO codes in the glove box will get you there quicker. I can't tell you what all the codes mean, but here is a link to a RPO codes book in pdf, be patient its like 175 pages.

Re: abs question

but are the spindles interchangable between a 88-98 on the 2wd's 8 lug only? I know 88-91 trucks are interchangable cause the body the body style changed in 92.

Re: abs question

I have a habit of going to a parts house website to find out if parts may be interchangeable. To do that, at O'Reilly's for instance, I'd key in the vehicles that I wanted to know about and the part I needed and compare the part numbers that are generated. If the P/N is the same.....you have your answer. If not, you have your other answer.

Was the website you were thinking of

http://www.compnine.com/vid.php

Not sure if this was what you meant, but just throwin it out there, shows all the RPO's for the vin from 1980 - 2010. Worked great for the truck I may be getting!

Re: abs question

My "Standard Catalog of Chevrolet Pickup and.....from 1918 to 1995", says that RWAL is all that was on them until '95 when 4WAL was made standard. My take on that is anything prior to '95, only had antillock on the rear axle.

Crew cabs & Suburbans were the square body style. STD cab 2500/3500 and all 1/2 tons were the new body style in 88-91.

Im guessing you have tubular upper control arms? if so any 88-00 of the same style body 2500HD or 3500 spindle will work.

I typed 2500HD because there are 2500LD trucks with 6-lug axles.

You have RWAL.
