MATE black paint

i know, there are a ton of different threads on this but most are old...guessing the low clear paint jobs arent as popular anymore. while getting my glass back in my truck, i primed and painted the window frames to make painting the truck later a little easier. i used SEM hot rod black. lays down nice so far, but i do not like the sheen in it at all. im looking for something more flat, or matte. ive seen a few trucks on youtube that have the perfect color but they used rustoleum flat black, and im not sure if i should go that route. im looking for something cost effective, but that seems too cheap lol. but i dont know what others would have to say after having it on their truck for years.

my truck is not a show truck but i like to show it off. not looking for some ridiculous paint job, hoping to find something that doesnt hurt the wallet as much. preferably a single stage because i will likely be shooting this myself and i am not a paint and body guy. below is the type of sheen i am looking for, although that is a wrap.

let me know what you guys have used or can point me in the right direction!

Re: MATE black paint

I’ve seen a few people use John Deere Blitz black - low gloss. It is relatively cheap and comes in spray cans or quarts…

Re: MATE black paint

ive used a good bit of rustoleum over the yrs...if i wasnt trying for a super paint job ,i wouldnt be scared of it..i use acetone to thin it and buy hardner from tractor supply..holds up very well
matter of fact, just sprayed almost 4 gallons of it (primer+paint) last weekend on my 30ft gooseneck trailer

Re: MATE black paint

ya ive read about both of the above suggestions. im just not sure how it holds up over the years of a truck that will be outside? any word on how it cleans up as well when i go to wash the truck? do you think Rustoleum has the same endurance as auto body paint?

Re: MATE black paint

I don't think the rustoleum holds up good as auto paint..it will fade out..it will get thin
But I'm mainly referring to the gloss paints..I've painted alot of trailers and equipment with it over the yrs..
my 20ft trailer I built about 20yrs ago is faded out and the paint is getting very thin...it's due for some more paint now..it sits in the sun all the time
But I don't think it has uv protectors like auto paint will..

Re: MATE black paint

ya thats what im scared of, having to repaint due to it fading in a few years. i do plan on buying a car cover for it and ONE day building a carport, but i dont know if the car cover will help it enough. i was messing around youtube and found one made by "autobody master" . never heard of them, but its relatively cheap and from this youtube link it looks like the exact color im wanting.

Re: MATE black paint

yup have to get it right the first time lol. but I'm ok with it. if I had the money a good bc/cc is what I would go with but it just isn't in the budget...but I still want something decent. going flat is also a little more forgiving on the body work.

Re: MATE black paint

I also can't find anywhere to buy the paint from the link above. they have a website but I can't find the paint on there.

I came across one made by Eastwood that also looks great

Re: MATE black paint

I painted my 68 hot rod satin black and I am very happy with it. When I restore my muscle cars I use high end PPG but It’s pricey so for the truck I just wanted it looking good without a huge bill so I picked up a one gallon Hot Rod Satin Black urethane single stage paint kit from evil bay. It wasn’t much maybe around $300 all in. The finish turned out great (I do all my own paint & body work). Now — it is a little more difficult to take care of. It marks easy and you must use products for matte paint when you wash it and even spray detail has a special product for matte/satin black. But you just get used to it. My trucks been painted almost 3 years in South Florida and it’s hold up very well. No issues.

Re: MATE black paint

I used the Eastwood flat/satin black on a 67 Nova project a number of years ago. The painter said it went on a bit weird but I think it turned out great. Single stage.
Pic of before and after. I bought it with a truly hacked LS swap.

Re: MATE black paint

Totally off topic but the 67 was a total LS mess. Which worked out for me. The PO bought the car as a no rust SS 67. He was not any kind of car guy. Saw it on CL in MPLS. Called the PO and he said the guy doing the LS swap didn't have a clue.
The PO owner was totally fed up and was ready to sell.
First engine/trans was a built LS6/4L60E. Quite fun.
Second engine was a LS2 sleeved and stroked to 427. It was a hoot to drive.
TCI stuff front and back. Sold it to fund another LS swap project.
Oh and the goldie in the pic was as killer pheasant dog but has gone to the great pheasant hunt in the the sky.
We have a 6 year golden lab and a new goldie waiting for this fall.

Yes panels were painted off the truck. Paint them at the same time under the same conditions.
