Re: '69 GMC Build Thread.

Can't wait to see it. I wouldn't worry about the emblems are hubcaps not being completely perfect. That what we call a 20/20 truck. 20 ft away, at 20 MPH, it'll look a show truck! That's what my '69 is.

Re: '69 GMC Build Thread.

67 C-30:

i'd be happy with a 50/50 truck. .

i'm happy with how the caps and emblems tuned out. given the effort i put into them..haha.

i'm just hoping the primer/paint help hide some of my imperfections in the bed and such...

...but if it doesn't. it's a truck. it's a beater..ish. and everyone needs a beater-ish truck. haha.

thanks for the kind words though! any comments you and others give me help so much from getting too bogged down with things.

any updates on the dually?

thanks again!

-Sam.

Re: '69 GMC Build Thread.

Nah, I mocked it up to see if everything was like I wanted it, and can't stay out of it long enough to start taking it back apart. You can imagine some of the looks I've got driving it around town. I've had several positive comments by total strangers at stores and gas stations. I drove it to pick up a pallet of chemicals for my business earlier this week, and one of the guys at the shipping hub tried his best to buy it! I have decided I'm going to cut down the flares a little more to get the rear wheels a little closer to the wheelwell. The rear tires set in just a tad too much IMO. What do you think?

Re: '69 GMC Build Thread.

67 C-30, it IS a great looking truck. and i can't blame 7you for not wanting to get out of it. haha. as for the flares...it looks like they sit about 6 inches in, where as somewhere around 3-ish would be better. maybe?

...still looks badass. haha.

Re: '69 GMC Build Thread.

well!

today went good.

started off the morning, and discovereds the Binks 69 didn't wanna work worth sh!t. so, my mom and dad has picked up a little harbor freight gravitym feed gun. so we busted that out.

http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=47016

basically that.

so, we taped off the truck, since i had already roughed it up last night.

then the priming started.

---side note. we chose to use Valspar Tractor and Implement Primer and Paint. http://www.valsparglobal.com/val/res...alspar_imp.jsp ---

Cab...done.

now on to the hood.

hood..check.

continued on next page....

Re: '69 GMC Build Thread.

...continued from previous page.

on to the fenders.

i choose to take this time to thank my mom and dad, because without them, NONE of this would've gotten done. they've been the most supportive and encouraging for this project, along with helping me wherever i may fall short. like painting! dad's better at it than me. hense. why he's doing it.

...and as you can see. it only takes one hand to paint with. what to do with the other? fill it with a can of Milwaukee's Best!

Cowl...

onto the bed!

tailgate...

other bed side...

front...

done!

So. it turned out pretty ok. i'm not gonna lie, i reallymessed up on some of the prep work;...particularly on the driver side of the bed. so, i'm taking that back down, and going to bare metal. along with smoothing over bondo. there are some pretty nasty..well...nasties that i didn't get feathered well. and i'm not at all happy with them.

but! tomorrow, if the primer is cured, we're laying down some green. there are imperfections on the bottom of the doors. but, i figure those are relatively small spots, compared to the bed side, and can be fixed while i'm driving it without a problem. just sand. skim. smooth. feather. spray. simple as that.

so, thats where she sits now.

almost ready for tags...

just have to finish color.
bolt on the headers and install the exhaust.
go over the brake shoes.
change fluids.
fill up.
go.

i almost just bolted her up the way she sat in the pics...and called it good.

...but i decided i wanted green.

SO!

that was a long post.

let's hear it!

Re: '69 GMC Build Thread.

Well, the primer didn't cure at all. it was still kinda soft and spongy...ish. i'm thinking because it was only in the low 60's for highs this weekend. so, we moved everything back into the garage so she can set for a bit.

and the best part? it allows me to work on the spots i don't like. i know i'm not going to be able to make it perfect. but. crooked sheetmetal i can live with. bad prep work...not so much.

so. needless to say, i get to learn the way of the long sanding board. wooooo sahhh. lol, let the blocking begin...

let's hear it!

whatcha think?

oh! it'll be this green. . Oliver Tractor Green.

with a white cab roof, along with the windsheild pillars, etc. you know what i'm talking about. haha.

opinions and ideas are greatly appreciated.

thanks again for everything guys!

Re: '69 GMC Build Thread.

Thanks Bill.

it's no where near as nice as yours. but. i've accepted that. .

i'm almost glad that we didn't spray today. it really lets me get rid of the things i don't like.

next weekend is supposed to be in the high 50's, low 60's. so, we're planning on doing some more then.

tomorrow i buy some more supplies. fresh bondo to fix my imperfections, some more sanding discs for the DA, and some more sheets of sand paper. maybe some Mountain Dew, Amp, and a can of Coffee...doing body work and school work is going to drain me. haha. my dad said he'd help at night when he gets home from work. so, luckily, i can enlist the help of a patient person who knows what they're doing. it's nice.

but thats where she stands now. we cleared out the garage a bit, so the trucks at an angle, and the box has more room around it. that'll make working alot easier.

if i get anything substanital done this week, i'll be sure to post.

otherwise...

let's hear it!

Re: '69 GMC Build Thread.

nothing REAL substantial. just have been stripping primer and getting the bed side smooth. man, those DA's work wonders. i even skipped a class to work on it. and before you get on me about it...there was nothing educatioanl going on. don't worry. .

tomorrow, i hope to get some more sanded down. and maybe some more bondo put on, so i smooth it out properly.

we'll see...

let's hear it!

Re: '69 GMC Build Thread.

Hey i've been watching your build thread for a while now and it's looking pretty good. If you havent fixed your bed yet you should get a tube of U.S chemical Icing and do a skim coat over any wavy spots and you can block them nice and strait. Thats what i do and it seems to work great IMO. Plus the icing sands easier than bondo so it doesnt take as long.

Re: '69 GMC Build Thread.

Jott,

thanks for keeping an eye on my build. . i can always used a supervisor. haha.

Icing huh? i'll look for it the next time i'm at the body shop. i FINALLY found a auto body supply store in town. they're kinda expensive. but, it's the only place i could find EverCoat Metal-2-Metal. so, i'll see what they have.

and an update!

i've just been sanding smoothing and filling....nothing exciting. at all. lol. so, i won't bother posting pics. . this weekend is looking like we're gonna make some progress. so. i'll let you all know!

Re: '69 GMC Build Thread.

Yeah. i like your build because it reminds me of mine. I'm redoing a 68 GMC. It's gonna be a driver like yours.

The reason i know of "icing" or "glaze" is because i went to a vocational school for auto collision and we used that stuff like crazy.

Re: '69 GMC Build Thread.

oooo. thanks Jott. someone who actually KNOWS what they're doing. lol. i've just been going off of what i find on the net, and my dad. and..well...my dad's a mechanic. not a body man. and granted he knows his stuff, it's all pretty "dated", if you will. mud, sand, and repeat. and it's working out ok. don't get me wrong.

i got some more stuff done...all the same tho. more mud, sand, and repeat.

i'll be sure to look into some glaze and icing if i make it back to the store before the paint get's thrown on tho. .

i can't remember, do you have a build thread going Jott?

Re: '69 GMC Build Thread.

No sorry no build thread here. I dont have a digital camera so i've been taking all of my pictures with a regular old 35mm camera. Maybe oneday i'll find someone with a scanner to get all of them on my computer. Here is one picture of my truck that my sister took for me during the summer. Since then i've torn it down to the cab and welded in drivers floorpan, inner rocker, rocker, floor support, and the panel inside the cab above the windshield. I just started the filler work. I hope to get some primer on the cab within a week.

this is about it for the warm weather painting...so...it's one shot really. wish me luck...i may need it.

Re: '69 GMC Build Thread.

well, we got 'er sprayed!

i have some touch up left to do. due to the warm weather, there was a swarm of lady bugs that appeared...so..they decided that my paint was a nice place to land. needless to say, i have to wet sand it out a bit and such.

but, alas! i'm happy.

and now...pics!

the white cab.

Hood..

Dad hard at work..

Bed.

cowl.

and the cab.

and. i know the bed sides aren't straight. or the doors. or the fenders. BUT! i'm alright with that. it does me no good just sitting in the garage in pieces, while i sand away body filler, my mind and sanity and money into a fine powdery dust. SO.

i have a bit left to do, aside from touch ups. bolt the headers on, and get the exhaust routed, check the brakes, bolt it together. . i'm very pleased with it.

whatcha think??

total cost:

Paint/Primer: ~$40.
Thinner: ~$12.
Sanding discs: ~$12.
Paint Gun: ~$20.

so. total. $84. . not too shabby.

Let's Hear It!

Re: '69 GMC Build Thread.

thanks Clemson!

the pics make it look a bit better than it does. but, overall, i'm thoroughly satisfied with it, considering the little bit of time that was put into the finishing of the body work.

it's gettin' close!
