1965 C-60, I want power steering

is there a sector that will swap with the one I have on the truck now so I can get power steering on my truck, I've already found the engine brackets to mount the pump.

Re: 1965 C-60, I want power steering

Not sure about the early trucks, but they may use a power cylinder instead of a box. Reason I say this is that my 70 has a hole in the axle. Otherwise, I would have to look at a later truck, probably 73 or newer vintage. Been thinking on PS too on my 70. Makes it a lot easier to turn around in close quarters. Also check with peanutbutter on here He just got a 70's C60 parts truck. It's mid 70's I believe.

Re: 1965 C-60, I want power steering

Thanks MROLDS, I'm sure I'll figure a way to put PS on the old truck, I wanted to update the brakes but everyone I talked with says the brake system was more than adequate for my needs, so now I'm rebuilding wheels cyl and put on a new master cyl. I got tires mounted today, I know an old timer that knows how to mount the widow makers, it was funny how fast he got it done. My truck came with 8.25-20's but I went back with 9.00-20's, updating the wheels will come in the future, but right now I'd like to see a little road time.

Re: 1965 C-60, I want power steering

I have 2 trucks that are 456s that have factory power and it is in the secter, bolts on just the same as manual. I can get you some pics tomorrow of both types, I have a 73 GMC that uses the outside slave that bolts on back close to the rear spring hanger with 3 bolts. I am going to put the 73 type on a 456 truck as you may never find a 456 power sector. I do not know what year they went to the seperate slave cylinder but should be easy to find out and easier to come by, you won't be sorry going to power steering.

yes please post the pics when you can, it will give me an idea what to be looking for. I'm new to the whole MDT thing, on my c-10's I've found it easy to adapter later model stuff to make things work, I just wasn't sure how things worked on the bigger trucks.

Re: 1965 C-60, I want power steering

Sorry I have'nt had time to take pics, but did take a quick look, made a mistake on the 456 sectors, they do use an outside slave cylinder but it goes to the axle. The 73 type cylinder bolts farther back on the frame. I have a couple of F 800 fords and they are totally in the sector with out any outside slave cylinder. The later GM and even the later fords might make good conversions. It will be next week before I can take pics of the different systems. I think lots of people would benefit from power steering on these bigger trucks. I'm working on the same problem on my 69 pete as my shoulders won't take the abuse anymore.

Re: 1965 C-60, I want power steering

Bump for pictures. Started doing some research on a power steering conversion on my 1961 C60 since the manual steering gear has half a turn of slack in it.

Re: 1965 C-60, I want power steering

My 71 had power steering. Had a ram mounted on the axle. I took the pump and brackets off the engine, since I'm chopping up the frame and won't be re-using any of it. I can take pics if you want to see how its plumbed.

Re: 1965 C-60, I want power steering

I have a C-60 that my bro in law gave that he has had on his farm since new. 27,000mi and been in the shed its whole life until last year, the dump bed still works as it should. I am gonna use it to haul scrap sheetmetal from my body shop to the crusher. It won't get driven much at all but it will be the best way I will have tried to do away with the scrap. I too would like to see how this power steering thing works out.Jim

Re: 1965 C-60, I want power steering

Perfect timing, I'll go take some pics this morning, I have two 456 trucks with factory power steering, I have the ps from a 73 GMC 65000 that I want to use on a 456 truck, I have the ps from a 70-72 chev school bus that does not use a remote slave cylinder and I have the ps from 77 ford F600 which might be a possable conversion. I will make seperate posts to keep them seperated.

Re: 1965 C-60, I want power steering

That truck looks pretty nice.

My '62 GMC 6500 also had Power Steering, but I really can't remember what it looked like. I do remember having to rev the gas a little to make it turn a little better when maneuvering at very slow speeds at times. It was really only like semi-power, but that was OK as I'm not a fan of steering being too easy anyway. In a smaller truck, I actually prefer manual.

My '62 GMC 4000 had no PS, and I never missed it, even when I would carry 14,000 lbs on it.

The secound one is 70-72 chevy school bus, doesn't use remote slave and may be the easeist to find and bolt on.

Re: 1965 C-60, I want power steering

The third is 1973 GMC 6500, may be able to find these also. Does use remote slave but is mounted between sector and frame, you will have to drill 3 bolt holes and hole saw one bigger hole in outside of frame. I'm going to see how this one works on my 1965 C80. Will post a couple of ford 600 and 700 gears that may be doable tonight.

Re: 1965 C-60, I want power steering

Peanutbutter, thanks for the pics, I've been looking at different trucks and getting some ideas. Gonna do a little modifying on my truck in the next few weeks, gonna get the old truck driving more like my 65 c10.

Re: 1965 C-60, I want power steering

BUMP I can't find any decent P/S boxes to fit my '65 NAPCO C-50. i'm looking at a box on a Mitsubishi Fuso FH100. Has anybody tried fitting a Jap truck box on a Chevy?
