Question Which Transfer Case

I'm working on my 85 4x4 3/4ton Suburban. The tranny (700R4) decided to go out and I am converting it to an SM-465. My plan (so far) is to use the stock transfer case. I have access to 2 Rockwell T221 transfer cases and I am trying to decide if I want to use them instead of the NP-208. I know the NP-205 is the best way to go, but I am using what I have. Would it be worth it to do the work now and use one of the T221's or maybe wait until the NP-208 fails and do the conversion then. I have a tranny set up for the rockwell and a tranny set up (kinda) for the NP-208. I have a new coupler -sleeve and all (I think) I need to do to use the Rockwell is to have new drivelines made.

I'm thinking about waiting for the NP-208 to fail, but the SM-465 is a heavy transmission....know what I mean. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!

I've heard several people on here not speak kindly about the T-221, but I love mine, and it has served my well! I don't do any hard-core rock climbing or anything like that. just use it to play and get thru the snow. Me personally, I'd be up for a good old stout gear driven X-fer of the chain one any day...

The 205 t-case would be the easiest to bolt up and the strongest. The 208 was available behind the 465, but the 465 would have to be a later model that has a 32 spline output shaft and the adaptor would need to be a round pattern. You would also have to swap the input gear of the 208 to a 32. I think the 221 would be too much work to adapt. Final thought---go with the 205

Using the NP-205 is not an option for me right now. I am using what I have in my shop. I have an SM-465 from a 82 Blazer and I also have access 2 SM-465's with the T221 t-case. To use the 82 SM-465 I know I have to change out the input on my NP-208, and to use the other set up I have to have my drivelines changed. My friend said I can have have both of the 221's and one of the older SM-465's, so I guess I'm trying to decide if I want to spend a little extra on modifying my driveshafts. Thanks.

Take the 221's and SELL THEM. If you found someone who wanted one for parts or a spare, you could get big bucks for it.

I've got a '61 Chevy Apache K10. I just recently blew up my Rockwell T221 transfer case. I'm having trouble finding parts to rebuild my xcase. I can find everything I need except a low gear. If anybody can help me out on parts I would be greatly appreciative. I know that parts are hard to find, or they seem to be for me. Thanks for any help anybody can give.

So you have access to 2x sm465/t221 combos, and one sm465 just by itself?

Does the sm465 by itself have a 10 or 32 spline output? If it has a 10, you cant buy a 10 spline input gear for the 208.

I also had a Rockwell blow up on me, I would say go with the 208. You dont really hear about them crapping out unless the case itself breaks.

If you plan on doing hardcore wheeling, however, I wouldn't run either. Go NP205 and dont look back.

I have never had any problems w/ my 465/Rockwell combo.If you were doing hard core wheeling I would go np205, although I see a big demand for the 221's for wheeling around here also.

I have two 10 spline SM-465's and Rockwell T221's sitting in my shop, and (at the time) a 32 spline SM-465. The SM465/T221 actually belong to a good friend of mine, but he said I could use one set up if I wanted to. He bought them when he was acquiring parts for his 63 chevy truck. His project is converting the 63 to a 4x4. Along the way he acquired a divorce mount NP-205 and I came across a 2wd NV-3500. Now the plan is, my friend is going to use the NV-3500/NP-205 in his 63.

I ended up using the 32 spline SM-465 and adapted my NP-208 for the project...had to change out the input gear. I did have the NP-208 blow apart on me. I came across a set of 33's and I was mainly after the wheels, but the tires had a little life left on them so I used them. The tires needed balancing so I had that done, but it didn't last. They got out of balance again which caused something to bind up and got the Burb in 4wd. I didn't make it home in time and the chain snapped and took out part of the case. Similar situation happened on the 2nd transfer case, but fortunately it didn't break.

Right now I am waint for a UPS to deliver my Warn Premium hubs so I can replace the autolocking hubs. I will also have a newer set of tires put on the Burb before I drive it again.
