In bed spare tire mount/carriers - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I've never had or seen any in bed spare tire mounts and recently I acquired 2. Both were from short beds. One was mounted on the LH front corner and was a 69-72 bed. The other one is from a 68 and was mounted in the RH rear corner. Anyone else see the RH rear one?

I have only seen one on a shortbed, and that was a 73-87 style truck ( in rear). I have seen several longbeds with them in both spots. I think it was just a preference. Couple guys told me they put it in the rear because they could reach in easier to get spare and it allowed them to have their front tool box. I am going to make/get one to put in the rear on my 70 longbed.

I have also heard folks didn't like them in the rear because they block their view. I am guessing those folks were to use to NOT using their outside mirrors.

The rear right side is pretty rare since it has the best opportunity to block a view. The left rear position is where my 85 resides and does not hinder my view at all. I like mine at the rear for no better reason that it does give a place to hold onto getting in and out of the bed.

One member on here thought the rear mount one might have been from a square body. I'm not sure. The paint matches the bed floor. I've seen in other posts guys say that a RR tire mount was likely aftermarket. This thing is definitely manufactured, but by GM, or? I'll have to look for any numbers/markings on it later.

Up in the Canadian prairie where I'm from where shortboxes were extremely rare all the trucks in the 60's and 70's used to have the spare mounted on the drivers side between the cab and fender tub. Pretty much never saw a spare mounted under the bed growing up. It's pretty hard to get them out in winter time.
There were a few "cool guys" with money. ( their dads had money, close enough) and they moved the spare to the back and had one on each side, ralley wheels or mags for the all tires and both spares. You want to look good, right.
After all, it's only money, dads money that he inherited from grandpa.

My 68 SWB has it on the front right, I had a 68 K20 that had one on the rear left and one on the rear right
