Re: Baby blue 1970 GMC LWB resto-mod

Hey,

Good to see another fellow Okanagan resident! I remember seeing this truck on castanet, if I remember the asking price correctly, I think you gotta a pretty sweet deal there. Looks like a great start! I'm knee deep in a build myself, keep meaning to get a thread going. In case you didn't know, KMS here in Kelowna carries most of the parts for these trucks, so if you need something quickly its a good place to go. Prices aren't quite as good as ordering from the states though...

Re: Baby blue 1970 GMC LWB resto-mod

Hello! Yes I think the truck might have been on Craigslist before but Im not sure. I found it through a friend of a friend. I have no idea what the asking price was but I got it super cheap. It needed a few things right away but nothing major. A couple hundred bucks on interior parts from LMC and its looking good! There is a KMS here in Kelowna? Why did I not know this?? haha. Im going there tomorrow to spend some money!

Cheers
Lonnie

Re: Baby blue 1970 GMC LWB resto-mod

Got the interior all finished up today. Final bits of trim, white face gauges and new black and chrome instrument bezel. Thats pretty much it for the interior now. Also got the glass blue dots installed with the new tail light chrome trim. Wired in a LED lisence plate light because the truck didnt have one for some reason. Ive got new clear reverse light lens's to install but I forgot to do it today. I'll do that next week when I have some time to work on it again.

The black wheels are starting to grow on me... Only about another month on the road before it goes away for the winter here. Hopefully I will have my 20/22" wheels by the time it comes out in the spring.

Looking good. Some black rims look great on these truck. No sure I am a fan of yours, but it was a solution to your problem. Oxidized rims are pretty easy to get cleaned up and polished back out.

Re: Baby blue 1970 GMC LWB resto-mod

I meant to ask when you posted about your new steering wheel. Where did you purchase this one?

I like the one I currently have, but I do want the billet adapter and since I can't find a GMC logo billet horn I will go with a bowtie. The bonus for me, would be having option's to change my steering wheel for a different look here and there.

Not sure if this is what you're looking for, but this is the button I'm putting on mine.

I think that will work only with the Grant wheels. When i bought mine, there was no GMC option unfortunately. I got mine off ebay. $109 inc the billet adapter. They are super cheap but the quality is very good.

I wasnt too worried about painting the wheels. They were ugly wheels from the 90's and they just happened to come with the truck. Thats the only reason they are on there. They will be gone by next summer.

Yeah, that's the problem I was having. Guess I can get a blank on and have someone machine it in for me. Thanks. What brand is your steering wheel?

Re: Baby blue 1970 GMC LWB resto-mod

Added new reverse light lenses today. Got rid of the old foggy ones. Bought a new door lock set also. Mine are worn right out to the point of not working properly anymore. I might try to get them installed this week depending on the weather. My shop is nothing more than a medium size storage unit with a big work bench, so I can only work on the truck when the weather allows. Once it gets cold, everything goes on hold until springtime.

Re: Baby blue 1970 GMC LWB resto-mod

Got some new parts today...

Chrome door sill plates, chrome 1969 round style C-10 mirrors, lower control arm 8" airbag cups are finished now. Lowering blocks and frame c-notches I already had made last week. Just need to find another set of lower control arms so I can get the cups welded in and new ball joints installed so they are ready to throw in when I do the bags... Im trying to get as much as possible done and fabbed up beforehand to make the bag install as quick and "bolt in" as possible...

Re: Baby blue 1970 GMC LWB resto-mod

New door locks and ignition tumbler installed today. Now I can lock BOTH my doors from the outside! I thought it would be a big job but swapping the actual locks took about 10 minutes. The hardest part was pulling off the doorpanels and reinstalling them.

Locking chrome gas cap from KMS today. $11. Doesn't seal as tight as the other chrome twist on cap I have tho. We'll see if it leaks or not. I want the security of a locking cap

Re: Baby blue 1970 GMC LWB resto-mod

Ordered my disc brake conversion kit from CPP last week. Apparently takes about 3-4 weeks to arrive. I got the 5 lug disc brake kit with the 2.5" drop spindles. My master cylinder is already upgraded to a power booster unit. My truck is already lowered about 5" in front. Adding these drop spindles is gunna make it pretty low. That's ok. Won't be driving it until spring and I should have my air ride installed then. I'll post some pics of the CPP kit when it arrives. Now I just need to track down some shorty headers to replace my long tubes. They will be literally laying on the ground after the spindles go in...

Re: Baby blue 1970 GMC LWB resto-mod

Looking great / how does it ride with the heated springs ??

I just bought lowered springs instead but hav'nt installed yet / I am saving to pour a slab in my garage but curious to how it rides ??

mirrors are awesome / I'm ordering those right now !

my style would have been to powder coat the wheels white ant paint the half and the cap part white and there it is / I can't wait to start my build !

Re: Baby blue 1970 GMC LWB resto-mod

Rides fine if you do it properly. Hotroders have been doing it for decades. I'm not gunna recommend doing it, but it can be done safely. For me this was just a temporary solution because I am installing my air ride in the spring before the truck goes back on the road.

Re: Baby blue 1970 GMC LWB resto-mod

My parts collecting is continuing. My truck is parked for the winter so I am stocking up on parts for springtime. Just ordered some "8-350" emblems off ebay, and I am still looking for some GMC 1500 type fender emblems. Pulled out my old 5 lug 15x8 Rally wheels to get them painted up for springtime. I will need them when I install my CPP 5 lug brake conversion kit and drop spindles.

Ordered my Slam Specialties RE-7 bags this week and my front upper and lower plates. Im just running them on Shrader valves for now.

Still waiting on my CPP brakes and spindles. Been a month now... Still waiting on my Slam bags and brackets. Gotta love living in Canada. Nothing seems to get here quickly. Since I have nothing to play with, I went and bought myself the Accuair stage 2 kit with eLevel and dual compressors. Can't wait for springtime to arrive!!

Re: Baby blue 1970 GMC LWB resto-mod

Bought some used emblems from the sales section here.. got them in and repainted them. Looks good as new almost. Side trim also came in. Thanks Teeitup for the good parts and fast shipping. Ive started stripping the annodizing off them to get them ready for paint and polishing. Should have them done in a few weeks.
