Re: 4L60 (700R4) DIY Rebuild

I scrounged a few hours today to work on the trans, and it is "essentially complete". The day started off with an enhancement of the servo install tool. (See original tool in post #59.)

Here's the servo install tool. I just used two scrap pieces of metal and a couple of nuts and bolts. Even with the tool, I could not get the snap ring on. As it turns out, the band was too tight. The Transgo instructions were not clear, and when I set up the washers for the servo I did not install the cover. I had just pushed on the piston assembly. Once I tried to do the final installation it was apparent, because the tailshaft would not turn, that you can't push hard enough on the assembly to seat the band. I re-did the adjustment procedure and ended up taking out two more washers. All is now OK. Tool worked great.

In order, I then installed:
1) Case checkballs
2) Governor and converter screens (not covered in ATSG manual!)
3) 3-4 accumulator
4) spacer plate & gaskets
5) 1-2 accumulator
6) Auxilliary valve body (also disassembled & cleaned this unit)
7) Throttle (TV) lever and bracket assembly
8) Valve body & manual valve link
9) Fwd clutch feed pipe
10) Case electrical connector
11) Lockup solenoid & wiring harness
12) Detent spring

All of this is covered in the manual. I did not use the pinless accumulator pistons I had bought since the original pins and bores were in great shape.

Here I am on step five of the above sequence, ready to install the 1-2 accumulator assembly. I show the heavier of the two accumulator springs being installed after the spacer plate. The lighter-duty one is below the plate. Be sure you keep track of where these two springs go, because the manual does not give you any info differentiating them.

And here is the completed work, ready for the filter.

I had previously installed the governor and tailshaft housing. so I have to install only the following:
1) Filter, gasket, magnet & pan
2) Side pressure plug
3) Speedometer (VSS) sensor
4) Filler tube
5) Shift lever

...but for the purposes of this thread, the assembly is complete. I will reference this thread in my build thread that I will be starting in the near future. I will also revisit here when the truck runs, to report on the health of the trans, but that is at least a year away. I hope this has helped those who will be building their first 4L60!

Re: 4L60 (700R4) DIY Rebuild

awsome hope it works great for you. Thanks for the great write up really helped. By the way I went and looked at the code on trans out of my sons trans am and it starts with a 9 that means it should be an 89 year trans but it didnt have aux vavle body and had 27 spine input shaft witch should be a pre 87, also the trans in my brothers boys trans does not have aux valve body but did have 30 spine input but it was a SERTA trans(GM rebuilt). So I can see that because they would uf updated the input shaft but you cant ad an aux vavle body to a non aux body case.

Thanks for the bump, 55dude. Although I'd messed around with transmissions a little before, this was my first 700-R4. I thought this thread would inspire others to try their hand. I'll be looking at it again when I do my next one!

Thanks, Low Elco! Every day I work on the ol' girl I get a little closer to coming back to this thread to report on the trans. Thanks for keeping it alive!

Hello H2O. Here is where the trans is today (behind that big ol' distributor cap):

I have not run it yet. (wife wrecked the basic transportation [had to fix], laid pavers, put in a water feature, built 2 Christmas train layouts for kids, etc., etc.) but I'm building another 4L60 right now. I'm actually doing a seminar on 4L60s on Saturday for a local car club, so your timing is excellent! Here are some pics of the "workstations" I'll be using for the seminar:

There will also be a slide presentation. If anyone on the forum can make Lebanon, Ohio on Saturday, Jan 10, 2015 at 9:00 AM, PM me with your phone number -- and post "PM sent" here -- and I'll give you directions.

I agree, but I doubt it will happen. I don't have a camera, and I'm worn out from the prep work.

I got a lot of great comments from the 20 or so people that attended. I was pleased with it as well. (Zero-degree weather hampered the attendance.) We had our club meting last night and even a few people that weren't there had positive comments, so I guess I dun good. I tried to post the 150 power point slides here, complete with my notes on each slide, but the file is 35 Mb and is over the limit. Sorry.

Yeah that would be cool too bad its so big. Well I'm glad to hear it went so well and thanks for sharing what you have I have found it very useful in my rebuild. I have finished most of my rebuild still have the valve body and the pump to finish.

You're close to being done! I did put the power point file into Dropbox but, when I looked at it I couldn't see the notes that go with the .ppt file. I could only see the slides. If anyone wants to PM me I'll send them a link. Possibly, if you subscribe to dropbox, you'll be able to download the file and see the notes also.

Re: 4L60 (700R4) DIY Rebuild

I have gone back and looked through a lot of the old posts on this site and you have been the only one that I have seen that has followed through with updates even 4 years later. Great job man! So many post and then just disappear (I am guilty at times myself) and you are kind of left feeling unfulfilled. So, thank you for keeping this up to date and for a great walk through on this. I doubt I will ever have the guts to try my hand at it, but who knows.

Thanks for the kudos, man. The engine has run but I'm still waiting to fire up the trans. I've gotten to where I hate the cold, so I haven't been in the garage since the seminar. I'm currently putting up my old G-scale train around the basement ceiling, where it's warm. (That's cheaper than going to Florida, but not by much...)

Thanks, 8lug! I'm still alive out here. I've spent the summer mostly shooting hi-power rifle but I'm back on the truck as we speak. Doing some bodywork...ugh!

Re: 4L60 (700R4) DIY Rebuild

Is the 4L60 (4L60e?) and upgrade over the 700r4?

And does anybody use the 4L80 in classic trucks? Or is it usually unnecessary?

Re: 4L60 (700R4) DIY Rebuild

Yes, 4L60 and 4l60e are upgraded based on 700R4.

4L80 and other later transmissions are used in many trucks the members build here.

All depends on the availability of parts and pieces and the builders preferences.

Heck, some builders like the TH400's still....depends on end use needs.

There are several great build threads on the Engine Transmission home page.

Have fun
