Power steering conversion

Okay, I am thinking on EVENTUALLY putting power steering in my truck and basically was wondering, since I need to get my steering box rebuilt/replaced if it would be a bad thing to put a power gearbox in without being hooked up to a pump. obviously I would need to keep it filled with fluid to lubricate everything but would this be a bad thing to do?

Re: Power steering conversion

not good to do, very very hard to steer, power steering is a lot quicker ratio.
what motor do you have. got mine from the junk yard it was rebuilt too. just look out the 75-78 or so have metric fittings...
if you can get the pump brackets and lines and box from the same truck

Re: Power steering conversion

I know the parts are fairly cheap to do this conversion but I have higher priorities like new wiring harness, but i guess what I was asking was would it be hard on the steering box to not have fluid constantly pumped through, my 99 had the pump go out, but the box was fine after running it like that for 6 months so I know how hard it is to steer with a power steering box without the power part

Re: Power steering conversion

I had a Chevelle drag car that I had removed all of the power steering stuff from. I had screwed some hose ends into the box and ran the over to the inner fender and put rear end vent plugs in the ends of the hoses to keep it vented and the thrash out. Also the small run of hose was just enough to keep all the oil it ever needed to stay happy.

Re: Power steering conversion

Okay, that makes it a little more viable to confirm, thanks for the input!
