decoding vin on '67 GMC

I've been trying to decode the vin number on my '67 GMC short bed stepside. I'd really like some help with this. Every site I've tried online so far hasn't been any help because all the sites ask for 17 digit vin and my truck only has 15. I'd really like to know which engine/transmission and any other info about my truck that vin could provide. So any help with this would be great.

Re: decoding vin on '67 GMC

we are going to need the numbers of the vin you can keep the last 5 or 6 if you want... but even then it tells about your truck.

Re: decoding vin on '67 GMC

Hey Wild Bill, welcome to the website. That's a neat little '67 Fenderside you have there.

That doesn't explain the 4th and 5th digit correctly. On Paul's decoder it's the same. His decoder also says the 6th digit is the plant and in his example it's the 9th digit. The 4th and 5th digits are supposed to be letters for the bed type and they are numbers. The 7th digit is supposed to be a letter for the model year and it's a number. I'm confused.

The VIN will tell you which motor configuration but not the size. For instance, your's is a V6 truck and it doesn't let you know which one. It doesn't tell transmission either. The model number tells more and the label on the dash tells all options. Unfortunately,it would be rare for you '67 GMC to have one. For the most part they just were never put in their place.
I can see it's been fixed up with some things changes. But,from what I see it didn't have the Custom or Super Custom options, which would have given bright work trim at the windows. So,your seat would have been a full vinyl bench and the grille/bumpers/hubcaps would be painted. Power steering is a rare option on those, which would be a ram-assist type.

Re: decoding vin on '67 GMC

Thamks everyone for your help in decoding this vin number. From what i've been able to find if my truck had the V-6 engine it would be a 305 V-6. Right now I've got a 305 V-8 in it. My Ol'truck is a work in progress, and it keeps me out of trouble

Yep, Its also in the 67 GMC owners manuals. For the 1st digit, if its a K, then its a 4x4 conventional cab. If its a P, its a forward control.

This truck could have had a 351 V6 as well. An interesting side note, the V6's holds about 7.5 gallons of coolant compared to 3 for the inline 6's!

Re: decoding vin on '67 GMC

WildBill, Welcome to the forum from another Florida boy.

I have looked for a good vin decoder for the 1967 GMC for a while all over the net and in books, and never found a good one. There's lot's of them for the 68-69 GMC and lots for the 70-71 GMC. But the 67 GMC does seem to be a different format. So after researching lot's of text I just made one that seems to work. Here is a pic using your vin. Sorry I have no photoshop or powerpoint skills. If you save the pic and blow it up you can read it better.
Nice lookin truck you got.

So you have a 2wd, v-6, 1/2 ton, shortbed, fenderside, built at Pontiac, in 1967, and gvw is less than 6000.
