I am in need of an SUV for my wife.Is there any thing I sho
uld be aware of on these? I know the 88-98 models seem to have been tough as nails.

Re: Is an 02 gmc suburban a reliable vehicle?

My mom loves her 03 Tahoe it's fully loaded with all the options and is all wheel drive with a 5.3 currently it has 157k on it and my dads 2005 1500 work truck just rolled 210k and other than regular maintenance never a hiccup for either. We've done multiple trips in it to Oregon and nevada in the winter with no problems. The third row of seating does help with giving everyone their own space but doesn't leave room for luggage behind on the Tahoe it should be better on a burb.

Everything is going to need repairs. Early 00's GM trucks and SUVs are built very well and have few regular problems. My 00 Silverado has 200k miles and I've only replaced a few smaller items. I've been an auto tech for 12 years and I've done few repairs to these trucks.

It's impossible to know what a vehicle will end up needing but those suburbans are cheap and a good bang for the buck.

This. My 00 Z71 has 160K and has been absolutely GREAT to me, however, you're looking at a 12+ year old used vehicle that you don't know the history on... with anything that age, it's buyer beware, so look it over carefully. The lower the mileage you can find/afford the better.

Re: Is an 02 gmc suburban a reliable vehicle?

I know this may not rest your mind much but I rebuild this body style 99-07 truck and SUV from wrecks and have been doing so for a long time. I see these things in all sorts of conditions and have had all of the parts off and in my hands. It is not unusual to see this type of truck with 4 to 5 hundred thousand with the original motor still in place and running still. I personally have had some with over 3 hundred thousand that still ran and drove great. Just thought I'd share. Jim

Re: Is an 02 gmc suburban a reliable vehicle?

Some of the 99's had intake gasket issues, I had to replace one. I think they resolved the issue by 00 or 01. But good trucks overall, expect to replace wheel hub/bearing assemblies around 180k or so on 4x4's. Still get my vote for best bang for buck trucks.

turn everthing that makes noise in the cab down, and listen for noise. Also jack them up and check for play. It can be hard to tell when they'll go, as they can go fairly fast. Just assume if the trucks got over 150k and they haven't been done, that you will have to do them.
