remove/install engine and tranny. Together or not?

1987 v20.

Sbc and sm465 coming out, 5.3 ls and sm465 going back in. Might leave the tranny in, but wouldn't mind opening it up if convenient. Transfer case doesn't need to come out.

If you only need to remove the engine, do you just pull that, or do you drop the transfer case off the back side, then pull the engine and tranny as a unit?

If you're removing the engine and tranny, do you take them out together, or one at a time?

Depends on how much room you got.
And your engine hoist. How far does it reach.
Do you have an engine tilter to keep it level while pulling or just gonna hook a chain to it.
Hood off or on?

that sm465 weighs a ton...I pulled mine out with the engine but its much easier to split it if you have the equipment...I'd drop the transfer case for sure..

The T-case has to be removed. The engine and tranny can be removed together and in my opinion is the best option.

You'll need lots of head room for the engine hoist and an engine leveler so you can bring the angle of the engine/tranny up and down as needed.

On my K20, I had to remove both the front wheels and put the front diff on jack stands to lower the front end and get the clearance I needed to clear the grill.
