90 Suburban Project 700R4 Trouble

Fellow gear heads,

Here is my problem: As some of you know I am trying to finish up the 90 Suburban Project. I droped in a new tranny with a 383 Stroker to turn it. I have about 1,200 miles on the tranny and now it wont come out of first gear. I have reverse and I can start it in first, second, third or Over Drive and when I try to mannualy shift it, it wont shift down. When I start out in OD and get going down the road it will not shift out of first. I was thinking it could be the Governor Gear which I have been told could cause this problem. Does anyone have an idea of what it could be?

Thanks,

Patgizz,

Well I haven't jumped into the repairs yet. I have never messed with a tranny nor have I ever had any problems out of one. Can you tell me what to look for on the TV cable?

Any info would be greatly apreciated!

Thanks,

Patgizz,

If it was a cable issue I would have found it during instalation, right? I have put 1,200 miles on it, one day turned the truck off and the next morning she wouldn't down shift out of first. I know I can manually take the TV cable linckage off at the tranny and place it into gear with my hand but I am still not sure what to look for with the cable.

Lost in the sauce, I am dipping into the cool aid and I don't even know the flavor!

you might try the governor as well. I think they are about $60 or so at the dealership.

KShortell,

Thanks for the link. I will give it a shot.

Jonboy,

The governor is on the outside of the transmission right?

Sort of. There is a circular cover about 3" around or so, towards the back. It is held on with a clip that will slide out of the way. The cover should pop off, and the governor should pull right out. This is NOT the cylinder held in with the snap ring towards the front of the trans.

Well I have some bad news!

The 700R4 is toasted. Gary at the tranny shop told me it was gone. Good news is GM says they will warranty it and Gary is only going to charge me $300 to do the swap.

I can not wait to get my slab poored so I can do the wrenching here at home. You never realize how much money you save until you start paying someone else to work on your truck.

I am trying to post pics of the 350 to 383 stroker swap can anyone help?

Thanks,
