Yep,the ole tractor concept...gears over HP. Doesn't hurt 'em being so dang light either. My li'l Samurai was like that. You could stop on a 45 deg+ hill, then just get going again light no big deal (in Lo4)

Re: Vintage 4wd Pictures:Other Makes

Got room for one more? 1985 may not qualify as "vintage" but it's largely the same truck Jeep introduced in 1962 or so...maybe it can be grandfathered in.

As I bought it:

As it sits now:

And, being an AMC product, there are a few GM parts in there. Of course, there are also a few from Ford/Motorcraft, Chrysler, and who knows who else...

Well Jim your old truck reminds, of a 54 manufacturer 4x4 Chevrolet that ran around the city where my mother in law and father in law stay until the mid 90s. Some of the people, around city informed some amazing experiences, about that old truck.

All the classics I keep finding around here seem to be the type with four legs carrying opium so how about some American muscle!

Just read through this thread. Lots of great pics! I did notice that we seem to be lacking mention and pictures of the Nash Quad. 100 years old last year. Pretty advanced for the time.

Re: Vintage 4wd Pictures:Other Makes

makes me want to find a Samurai, stretch the frame and build a box/close-in the cab. I love the utiltarian pickups, like FJs,but this is tiny. If I go economy I want to go all the way. I'll always have a big truck for when needed

Loys of Zuk's in my area, they use them like quads with wide tires for floatation, work great. A few FJ40's too.

Interesting, not a lot changed in 100 years in the suspension department, they got it right the first time.

Re: Vintage 4wd Pictures:Other Makes

Here is a pair of Scouts. I've seen this first one around town where I work. Caught him using our car wash on my way out the other day. Very nicely done. Must have done a lot to keep it looking like most Scouts I've ever seen!

This second one is more in line with what I'm used too for Scouts. As the old joke goes, if you are really quiet standing by one you can hear it rust..

I do happen to know who owns this one. The elder owner of the dealership I work at. The general idea is he got caught up in auction fever. He went to a local estate auction looking to buy some irrigation pipe and a trailer. He ended up buying two trailers, the pipe, a 1946 Chevy two-ton dump truck and this rusty 4 cylinder Scout pickup.

Yes it's rusty. Quarters, rockers, floors, inner bed structure. Ugly. Fuel line was plumbed into a regular 5 gallon red plastic gas can. On the bright side, with nothing more than filling the carb with fuel through the vent and a jump box the half-a-v8 lit right off and settled into a sewing machine smooth idle. He's not sure why he bought it. It is not a candidate for us to restore in the shop though. We plan on getting it running right, drives safe and functions well enough for somebody else to tackle the body. Heck, compared to some of the swiss cheese rides you guys from back east deal with, this baby is cherry!

Re: Vintage 4wd Pictures:Other Makes

cool rigs!!! My son has a 1972 Suzuki LJ20 which is pre- Samurai originally it had a 2 cylinder 2-stroke engine.....engine was bad when he got it and parts are rare, so he just finished putting a 81 Datsun engine and trans in it, it has a divorced trans case so pretty easy to hook it all up...The engine looks like it was made for it, just fits! I will get some pics and try and figure out how to post them....

KOOL I've always liked the Scouts, my uncle used to own a scout2 back when they were made in the 70's it had the soft doors with the plastic around the door area as a fill in panel...I have a lifted one from tractor supply in my car case collection..They were the TRUE 4x4's... All Wheel Drive.....
