Warranty work

mountie wrote:

Mr Rich...

If your crappy engine repair was at a GM dealership, then you have a warranty ( if your original warranty / extended warranty is in effect)....
If you return to any GM dealer due to their (GM) bad repairs, & they accept the truck - ( same complaint / second visit),..... Automatically, that repair is exempt from any time/ mileage limitations.

We were making comments to help another poster and I think I started to get things off-track so I wanted to start a new thread to respond to your comment. Keep in mind this was twenty-five years ago.

In my opinion the warranty work I received on my '89 Chev. K1500 EC amounted to vandalism. Parts were broken, scratched/ scraped up, cross-threaded and I was left with an engine that smoked up the parking lot with white smoke when I started the engine in the morning after my graveyard shift. When I know I can do better work than a so-called professional mechanic with access to better tools then what can you do? I didn't want to put myself through any more grief. That 350 that I installed myself? I got eighteen good years of use out of it and the only real reason I changed it out was because I could and I had a better roller-cammed engine of the same type to replace it for one of my retirement projects.
I take pride in my work under the hood of my vehicles. They are drivers and this one is not garaged so it is exposed to the weather. In the past two months I refinished the radiator support with POR15 semi-gloss. It should last for another decade easily.

Re: Warranty work

Nice job...

I changed my 5.7 when it had 220,000 miles, because of failing heads, and a friend ( famous for Grand Sport Corvettes), convinced me to not do the heads, but He'll get me a 4-bolt main 350 at the same cost. ( Swapped it at his shop in Burbank)

It's been great for another 170,000. Years ago, the GMC dealers were idiots working on my warranty work.

Re: Warranty work

I think we're of like minds on this issue. I kind of grinned to myself when I read your response. I'm fortunate in that my BIL's friend works at the parts counter of my local Chevy dealer so I've received a lot of assistance when it comes to researching and ordering parts. The sad thing is that a lot of parts for our trucks are no longer available. I've collected a lot of spare parts over the years just in case I ever need them.

Re: Warranty work

Me too..... Once in a while I will go and play at the salvage yards.

As for dealer work.... Dealers have 3 tier mechanics. #1 is the head mechanic, and he does easy warranty stuff.

#2 & #3 mechanics have less experience and do the pain in the ass work.... If they screw up, then the top mechanic fixes the damage... On your return trip.
