Stall Speed - Daily Driver

I'm picking up a new crate motor from Jegs

http://www.jegs.com/i/Chevrolet-Perf...429K2/10002/-1

I'm running the stock th350 and gears. Do you think its necessary to install a new torque converter and if so, what stall speed would you recommend?

Thanks in advance,
Ryan

I'm not that familiar with torque converters, do you think keeping the old one would be a problem?

Ideally you would measure the endplay with a special tool, stick your fingers inside to check the one-way clutch operation, and check the fluid for metal or water contamination.

Otherwise if it worked with the old transmission it's likely to work with the new one.

Re: Stall Speed - Daily Driver

I think his issue is the cam size of the new motor.

383"/.401" Lift, 194 / 202 Duration @ .050", and 112° lobe separation

He may need a looser converter, however I don't have the knowledge to assist.

That's basically a stock replacement engine, so a stockish torque converter will be just fine. It won't be happy with that Air-gap manifold though. It's be better with a Performer intake.

What's the difference?

Honestly, this is one of the things I hate about manufacturer's descriptions, they all say "This is great for the builder looking for more performance", but nothing about HOW it performs, where it builds power, or how it compares to other products they offer.

The descriptions for the Air-Gap and the Performer intake look almost identical, and they both say designed for idle to 5500 rpm.

Re: Stall Speed - Daily Driver

I'd stick with your stock converter, that cam is small enough that you won't have any problems.

The air gap doesn't have the exhaust crossover under the carb. On cold starts it will run rougher since the intake will be cold for a while. That crossover helps heat up the intake and makes the rich startup mixture atomize better. In warm weather it won't make much difference.

Re: Stall Speed - Daily Driver

I'd recommend sticking with the stock converter. What power that motor has is down low. Not knocking it at all as I have one sitting in the garage right now waiting on me to install it. Unless you're going to do other things to raise the power level in the upper rpm range, you won't like driving it with a loose converter. If you're going to drag race, sure, but I assume you'd have picked a different engine for that. I have a car with a 2800 stall in it. At the strip it's fun, but for normal driving, not so much.
