12 Bolt Brake/Axle Mismatch

Hey guys, I have an issue with a '67 I picked up the other day. I've been slowly going through it to make sure it's going to be reliable 'till I get a chance to really get into it. The truck has been pieced together from a few other trucks.

I put wheels and tires on it the other day at Discount Tire and one of the lugs started spinning and wouldn't tighten. Cut it off today and when I pulled the drum to put the new stud in I saw it was only contacting part of the shoe. Step in the shoe liner, untouched half of drum(see pics).

It's currently 5 lug. I'm guessing the PO stuck in some later longer axle shafts for the 5 lug. The axle flange sits pretty far away from the bearing. Need some input on where to go now. Should I be able to get the shorter ones...plug and play... or is there more involved?

Lets not get into all the wrong body parts discussion, lol. Unless someone has some fenders and a radiator support in Colorado. Already have a hood.

someone put '71-'72 axles in the '67 housing most likely. axles got longer sometime in '67 IIRC and if your housing is early '67 the 5 bolt axles would be longer. '67 would have 6 bolt hubs, front and rear. they probably did the same for the front components. '67 would have drum brakes up front, '71-'72 would be discs. do you have discs up front?

Yes, the fronts are 5 lug also. That's what I figured. I was more curious if I could just get the shorter 5 lug shafts. Briefly looking around last night I saw that Summit has a "kit" for it. The kit comes with spider gears and drums for $500. I know I don't need the drums and I would assume I don't need the gears. I would think I just need to get some short 5 lug shafts. Any ideas?

There is also a problem with the bearings are not riding on the proper hardened axle surface that it is suppose to ride on.

Your truck has a 67-68 grille, but the rest of the front clip is 69-72.
See how the headlights don't fit?
What year truck is it suppose to be?

You do not need to change the spider gears along with the axles. The spider gears are required in the '63 & '64 12 bolts. The '65-'82 12 bolts already have 30 spline axles and spider gears. In late '70 the differential housing increased in width by 1.5".

I was worried that I didn't remember the model-year change correctly, and I didn't. I was also hopeful that Captainfab would come along later and correct that in his usual non-critical fashion, which he did.

I know there are several sources for these axles, I just haven't had the need to remember them, but here's one, note that it does say that the axles are available separately:

I am swapping everything 5 lug from a 1972 GMC frame over to a 1969 C10 frame which is all 6 lug. The 1972 Axle housing is wide, and the 1969 axle housing is narrow just like your 1967. So I bought conversion axles from Moser that are the correct shorter length for the 1969 housing, but have 5 lugs like I want to convert over to the 5 lug setup on the truck.

Thanks everyone for the input. That's exactly what I thought. Just had to get some other opinions.

Lolife99....Notice the last part of the original post...I knew someone would go there. Haha. It is a 67 by the vin and the bed doesn't have markers. Although there's allot of 72 in it, I'm going with 67.
