Thanks Terry - I do prefer a smooth idle, and as much as I'd like a roller valvetrain for dependability, I'll probably go the lower cost route.

I totally agree with you. I really should have given all my options more thought, but I got caught up with the roller valve train aspects and horsepower rating of the SP350/357. I was originally going to buy a L31 GM new crate motor, but missed the last one available (that I could find) by 1 day. You can't even imagine how much I have in this now, besides the engine cost. Oh well its done now and runs great.

I have the L31 crate motor and that's one reason I left the factory cam in it. It's the smoothest idling 350 I ever owned. Our master mechanic at work even commented on how smooth it runs. It still has plenty of get up and go though.

Once I recover from all the work and cost, I may put a stock cam in it. (Wife is going to kill me)

I hear ya! I have a ton wrapped up in my truck - but it's a hobby. The engine was the only thing not new or rebuilt. I believe I have a crank or rod bearing going out (knocks under load). A peek under the valve covers showed no issue on the top side. I just got my 700R4 rebuilt, and will get my spare driveshaft cut down soon (depending on the virus since we're currently locked down). The plan is to yank the motor and TH350 together and have the new motor and 700R4 ready to go in its place.

...so, wanting to avoid drama I was thinking new Chevy engine, but I have to admit I'm intrigued by Five Star Engines in Arizona...stumbled on them via eBay earlier tonight. 100% feedback, for what it's worth. The 350/325hp may be right up my alley. $2495 w/free shipping & 1 year warranty. I may just give them a call tomorrow with a few questions. I don't need a replacement quickly, but would like to make a decision soon.
