de-rusting parts

Any methods that you prefer...I'm soaking in vinegar for 3-4 days

Any faster methods?

Re: de-rusting parts

I have seen on various shows some eco friendly products that remove rust in a day and were safe to pour down your drain on in your yard. I was going to try one of those when I get to that stage

I have used this with great results. It is safe and you can reuse it.

Re: de-rusting parts

I made an electrolysis tank when I did my Blazer. really worked well at getting rid of rust. The Evaporust that Tom mentioned is great too for small pieces, but becomes too expensive if you want to derust something large.

Re: de-rusting parts

Thanks guys for all the helpful tips...I think I'll try the electrolysis, once I get the heat in my shop working again. Bleed the lines, no help, must be the circulating pump

Muriatic acid (pool supplies) from Home Depot , Lowes etc. Submerge for 15-20 minutes, remove, rinse, done. For ferrous metals only, not aluminum. Ospho (hardware stores) for removing oxidation from aluminum. As always, gloves and eye protection needed.

Re: de-rusting parts

Phosphoric acid is in the paint section at Lowes/HD. For large items you can get molasses from feed stores and mix 5 gallons w/ water in a trash can. Its slow.

Muriatic (pool) acid. Done. A lot of people are scared of it. If you have common sense there is nothing to worry about. A lot of people think it costs too much. At $5 a gallon it isn't breaking the bank.

Re: de-rusting parts

Soak parts in Molasses...

Do a youtube search. Some interesting vids that shows it to work very well.

The problem with muriatic acid is that anything within a 10 foot radius that's made of steel will rust because of the fumes. Your tools, parts or anything else made of steel will be coated. I won't even store this stuff in my shop, I keep it outside. The only thing I use it for is to remove cad or zinc plating from nuts or bolts that need to be welded.
