What We Mean By Good Old Days
This shistuff is great! All this production for sales people only. I would have paid to see this in the theater in '66! You think Chevy ads are great, find some time to sit down and enjoy these.

Awesome! The figure 8 at Ascot was great! The Chevy II's for Yellow Cab cruising the freeway was a sight. Thanks for posting!

Re: What We Mean By Good Old Days
Those are some cool commercials. Imagine Chevy trying to sell a vehicle these days with the promoter sporting a wheel gun. No channels would give it air time.
The message then was new and improved, "American made" wasn't the focus because it was simply assumed that everyone already knew that. These days, "new and shiney" is promoted without regard to support of local manufacturing. Has anyone noticed that car commercials these days rarely say anything about the vehicle. Used to be they would at least give you horsepower and mpg. Rarely do the advertisers bother with performance specs, just some people dancing around, going to a wedding or driving a country road but no real useful info. It's all emotional appeal. Times have changed. |

Re: What We Mean By Good Old Days
The video quality was excellent, I was surprised. I thought when they were comparing the Mustang to the Chevys was pretty funny. Not a whole lot of apples to apples in that one.
I remember as a kid watching Bonanza. Lorene Greene was the old dad. I just looked it up. In 1966 he was 51 ... Younger than I am now by a bunch, ugh!

Re: What We Mean By Good Old Days
Yeah, lots of slanting the field going on. I noticed straight pipes on a Chevelle. Most comparisons put Chevy against the Ford OR the Plymouth in each comparison.
These aren't commercials, these are sales training promotional films GM produced to send to each dealership. None of this was ever seen on TV. Lorne Greene is Professor Chevrolet. The king salesman.

Re: What We Mean By Good Old Days
24/7/365 I want it all and I want it NOW!
Slow on down there little grass hopper. Matter fact why don't you just stop right there and listen to what I'm going to tell you. And look at my eyes. You don't need nothing but common sense and patience to have anything you need. But wanting it now went away with screaming for your bottle. You hear me? Now slow your pace, put thought into your actions, make sure they are your thoughts, and make every move count. Don't forget what I just told you. I don't want to have to say any of it again, you hear? But what I meant by good old days is everything about those films. A TV actor giving sales instructions, Bonanza, an All American values TV shows was pretty much paid for by Chevrolet. Not sure if there were any other ads or not during the shows, the competition fctor between the Big #, the high performance models in competition, using stunt driving as a way to show how good a car is , it goes on. It's the times these old trucks we like came from. The Camper trucks comparison cracks me up. I mean GM produced some very interesting entertainment for salesmen eyes only. Agent 007 7/8 and Dr Yes? That is rich! Throwing that full-size into reverse and drive back and forth was impressive to me. But I sure wouldn't want that one after that Shooting guns at tires. I just loved the whole thing.

Re: What We Mean By Good Old Days
Definition of The Good Old Days: Long enough ago that we've forgotten the bad parts.
Oh, and for me it was Looney Tunes - Bugs, Daffy, Elmer, Marvin, the whole lot. I have a huge collection but I rarely have time to watch any of them.

Re: What We Mean By Good Old Days
Before mini-dishes and cable TV where I live, I had all the old cartoons on VHS for my kids to grow up on. We only got 2 VHF back then and couple UHF.
When I was a kid it was Romper Room, Captain Tug, Bozo, Little Rascals, Ma & Pa Kettle, Lassie, all the western stuff. Then came all the '60s shows. It was a big deal every year when Wizard of Oz came on. ABC Wide World of Sports showed drag racing maybe twice a year...Winter and Summernationals. Major sports car races and very little stock car racing was what I remember looking forward to. TV was always a take or leave thing for me. We had a big family and I don't remember any fighting over what to watch. I'm sure any break in someone's routine drew some whining. I look back and can find very few negatives. I am not opposed to all that has changed since nor suggest going back. I enjoy hanging onto, living as much of the past as I can, not eager to toss old for new, and savor the memories, while moving forward with the changes... cautiously.

Re: What We Mean By Good Old Days
I must admit I was a drop jaw star dazed droolin' zombie after seeing the truck commercial. Made me want to go out and buy a 4' piece of lumber to hold
Chevrolet even produced this film in 1958. Very interesting, in a boring 1958 sort of way https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u7x0QGW4Wls&t=964s

Re: What We Mean By Good Old Days
I still remember when we got our first Phillips color consol tv and the whole family waited for Sunday at 7:00pm for Walt Disney world and then Mutual of Omaha's wild Kingdom we even ate dinner all at the same table at the same time cooked in the kitchen by Mom and nobody was ever late for dinner . Now it's the occasional holiday text or email...

Re: What We Mean By Good Old Days
All week long it was supper and on Sunday it was dinner at 3 or 4. It wasn't every Sunday with my family, but that was the tradition. My mom made most everything from scratch. We had a rule to turn the TV off while we ate. But TV was so big in it's early years they came out with TV dinners! Mmmm... Hospital food you can eat right at home in your living room from modern formed aluminum serving platter. No fuss, no muss. Hey, where's the microwave and how'm I gonna nuke this lumnia?
I remember it was popular for moms to make clothes for their kids. Sewing was very popular in households. Women did more with their hands creating things back then, it seems. Not that the same can't be said about more men these days. My dad made us things from out of Popular Mechanics.

They can say what they want. I'm living proof of whatever it was you said isn't true. I didn't forget. I just need to be told again so I know I can recognize it when I see it.

ItI had one of those Sears bikes. I think it was called the Screamer. 5-speed stick shift, banana seat, butterfly handlebars, and even a parking brake. It was the coolest bike in the world.
And who doesn't miss lawn darts?
