1961 straight 6 235 question

I went to go look at a 1961 today and I really liked it. But was worried about the motor. The owner promised to get it running, I head it turn over, we both believe it has a bad fuel filter. But I noticed something that I was not familiar with. I did not see any kind of Oil Filter anywhere. I believe this older 235’s has a oil canister that was mounted onto the manifold correct? I did my own research and I guess back then you could run these motors without any real filtering but it was still recxomned? I read on the stove bolt forum about a guy who plugged his engine temporarily while it was a daily driver. Anyways I was wondering if I could still get by when the truck runs when I park it while I find a filter to instal. Thank
Isaiah

Sure you can get by. Those engines were made by the 100s of thousands and most ran without a filter. My buddy isn't running one on his 235.

Oh really? I guess I am in the clear then! Thank you.

I’m still learning about the straight 6’s.
My old 1963 had a 67’ straight 6 that had an oil filter, so it threw me off how different this one is, I’m still trying to figure out what the black cylinder is that’s on the left side of the motor that goes the the minifold.

Take a closer pic.
It’s likely a modified road draft tube.

Unfortunately I couldn’t get anymore pictures. Do you or anyone else know where I could find the correct fuel pump for this motor? I keep seeing different kinds all over.

My old 63 'Fix your Chevrolet' book shows the oil filter under the dizzy on 4 and 6 cylinder on 63 motors. There is no mention of 61's.

Is this black cylinder going to the intake manifold?

A lot of folks do not know that the left side of the engine is really the driver's side so we usually just say passenger or driver's side for location.

Your pcv valve should be screwed into the side of the tube and lead to the intake manifold. That used to be the road draft tube in earlier engines and on later ones turned into the location for the pcv valve.

As for fuel pump, they are not hard to find. Rockauto has the standard and fuel/vacuum pumps.

Just wait until you are watching the distributor & your buddy races the engine up!

Model Year 1963 saw a changeover from the previous 2nd Gen L6s -- 216, 235, 261 to the 3rd Gen 230, 250, 292 L6s. Totally different animals.
