best bang4buck sbc crate engine??

Opinions? I have a 2wd k5 with a 305/th350 and 2.73 gears. I really like having higher gears for my interstate cruising but Im in need of a new motor since mine is 34 years old. I plan on using this as a weekend driver and to tow across state maybe once a month. Any suggestions will help. I was thinking of a blueprint 355 or gm350 that has 260hp. Thanks

The 260 HP Goodwrench is a hard package to beat. I Have sold hundreds of them when I had A shop & now I use them on all my projecs. I'm close to getting one for my 56 & taking out the 6 cyl.

Re: best bang4buck sbc crate engine??

i got a gm goodwrench 260hp for my 1969 truck in 2002-truck was a daily driver. in 2007 got another truck. parked the 1969 and built it again this time with a high performance motor-not a daily driver anymore- motor is a blueprint. i had little issues with blueprint when i got it but since i started driving it it rocks. has a 30 month 50k mile warranty. and i believe their prices are best bang for your buck. would recommend blueprint

You think the 260hp crate will be good for towing my other truck across state? I was looking at the edelbrock packaged crate from jegs.

Goodwrench crates come with warranties? It'd be hard to beat a 3yr 50k warranty.

I would give a look at GM part #12530282. Vortec heads and a roller cam for around 2 grand. Swap in a little bigger cam and I think you'd have a lot more fun with this than the 260 hp motor everyone swears by.

You will also need to return a suitable core for either of these engines. And the freight charges on sending in the core, if you have one, are your responsibility.

The 260 hp or 290hp engines are still the best deal out there.

Take the 305 to scrap and get $50 for it

(Steel @200 a ton, a 500lb motor will get $50)

Go to your local GM dealer parts guy. They will typically match prices and saves you the freight.

Re: best bang4buck sbc crate engine??

That's funny, Jegs makes no mention of core charge and it's cheaper and free ship. Pace adds in a $100 core charge.

These are new engines, so i don't get where the core charge comes from...........?

Re: best bang4buck sbc crate engine??

Even funnier----#12530284, the 305 version of the two bolt DOES NOT have a core charge at summit or pace.

What's going on?

If the truck is a daily driver, and his sole means of transport, I can see your point. If it is a toy that is going to be driven a few thousand miles per year, the warranty will be up before he hits 5k miles anyway. My truck is a toy, and I don't mind paying to play if I break something.

The core charge is $100 if you don't send it back. Hardly a deal breaker if you're spending $2000+ on a motor.

The 260 hp engine is a good, cheap engine for a truck that gets a lot of miles put on it.

The 290 hp version is the exact same motor with you paying $400 more for GM to stick a different cam in it. Hardly bang for the buck in my opinion.

If you were to buy the 260 hp engine and outfit it with Vortec heads, you're still going to have a flat tappet cam, and more $$$ invested because of the cost of the heads themselves and the self aligning rockers.

If you are worried about warranty, you can leave the stock cam in the motor I listed. The lift and duration #'s are pretty much in the middle of the road between the 260hp and 290hp cams.

The 260hp package is a good motor and should serve you well for a long time. I bought one for a 56 Chevy I had a few years back.

If I had to do it over I'd have went with the engine I linked above. Better heads and the piece of mind that the roller cam provides are definitely worth the extra $$$. Not having to worry about wiping a cam lobe during break in is more than worth a few hundred bucks. The main negatives to buying this motor are spending around $60 extra on your intake, and running an electric fuel pump.

I have seem local GM dealers meet on-line pricing for crate engines. No shipping cost.

plus local dealers have more incentive to help you if you buy from them and then in the rare instance you need help with warrenty service

Two possibilities, but both are guesses on my part. 1) that engine was made with a reman block, which most are nowadays. 2) environmental laws govern the selling of reman parts; case in point, the wording on the Advance Auto Parts website: "Core Charges are often mandated by state legislature, and, as such, the actual core charge and taxes on the charge may vary depending on the state in which you buy your part."

Re: best bang4buck sbc crate engine??

Most cars on the road today have an electric fuel pump and summit sells a nice aluminum intake for around $150. As for the flexplate Summit has a SFI rated one for around $80 that works great, I have used two of them one on a hot 383 another on the 12530283 GM vortec crate engine.
The 12530283 crate engine is an awesome motor for these trucks. With a Holley 4 barrel and good pipes it has a lot of power. DO NOT get the 290 hp motor, it has no low end torque.
I'm pretty sure the 12530283 is a brand new block. Jegs advertises it as brand new and there is no vehicle ID stamp on the block. Also it's a standard bore not .30 over.
Say what you like but the vortec 350 is the last version and most improved version of the old 350 motor. I have yet heard anyone to say they wish they had went with a 260 hp motor instead of the vortec.
