Painting in cold weather
I was thinking about finishing up my painting this weekend. It' supposed to be 50 and sunny.
My paintbooth is my carport encased in plastic. All I have left is the white stripe between the upper and lower trim. I'm using single stage Napa Crossfire Urethane enamel. Reducer is CR233 and hardener is CH254. It will be in the high 50's (58 -59) later in the week. Any help is appreciated? Thanks

Re: Painting in cold weather
Sounds kinda cold for CR 233.
Can you get some CR 231 or CR 232? I would have some faster reducer on hand and check the temp of the carport and the truck surface right before I mix.

Re: Painting in cold weather
This is just the reducer I had from when I first shot it about 5 weeks ago. Temps were in the 70's then. I can get some diff reducer if needed.
What does the diff reducer do for me? Does it have to do with flash times or drying or ??? Thanks

Re: Painting in cold weather
Right. The flash time will be a lot longer and harder to gauge.
Shooting in cool temps with slow reducer can cause texture or orange peel. Bring it down here and shoot it! I think the weather guy said it’s going to be in the 80s this weekend. If you drive fast you can be here by midnight!

Re: Painting in cold weather
I can get the other reducer, should this take care of any issues? do I need to worry about the hardner?
I will be in Houston, Texas for Thanksgiving, just didn't plan on bringing the 69with me!

Re: Painting in cold weather
The reducer will get you in the temperature range.
The CH255 is usually used for small repairs and will dry a little faster. CH254 and CH253 are used for large areas and full paint jobs. So the CH254 sounds good. It’s not going to effect how the paint lays out. Get the reducer and the temp in range, mix the correct ratios then spray a piece of scrap metal to be sure the surface temp is good inside you carport. If it sprays well on your test panel, go to town. If it’s dry turn down the PSI if its orange peely turn up the PSI.

Re: Painting in cold weather
Thanks, this time around I have two (yep 2) spare fenders in the booth (carport enclosed with palstic) with me to practice on before touching the burb.
Thanks again.
