Is this an Original 1968 K10 Power Steering Setup?

Just picked up this anniversary K10 a couple weeks ago and never even noticed until today that it has power steering. It’s not listed on the SPID. Is it original?

Don't know about the original part but it looks like mine. Mine is a 68 but it's not original either.

I know the 67 had the power ram assist instead of the steering box. Check out this link on it.
I have the whole thing out in my shed of parts I took off my 67 when it burnt up. Never did like it and it leaked like crazy as in the thread.

That looks correct to me. 68-69’s (maybe even 70) don’t have the adjustable drag link like the later trucks do. You also have the older style steering arm on the knuckle. I believe power steering became standard equipment on the 4wd trucks thus not included on the spid. However that axle isn’t original, it should have a closed knuckle 44. Hard to tell from the pictures, does it still have front drums? If so, that is likely a ‘70 axle. That is a really nicely optioned anniversary K10! Nice score!

Might be a dumb question but why does the spid have posit traction listed twice with different option numbers? Is that for front and rear axles? Looks like a nice optioned truck!

The pump is a later model perhaps square body style. Since not listed on SPID it’s doubtful a factory power steering equipped truck.

The '68 Information kit from the GM heritage site doesn't show power steering as being standard. It also doesn't even show it as an option on 4x4.

It's one of those unicorn things. There have been a couple pictures of 67-68 4x4 with PS (ram/slave) but to me, the frame in those pictures, doesn't look like a pickup frame.

I think that's what it is. I was going to research it but haven't gotten around to it yet.

Yes it has drums. Does not have closed knuckle. I thought that ended in 1967?

Would a 68 have a VIN on the frame to verify this?

That's what I was thinking but it looks original to me besides the pump. I've seen SPID's from newer trucks that list the power steering as an option.

Yep, axle is a 1970 only model, which is fine, drums are still available, 3/4's are obsolete. But that OE front posi would of been sweet. Nicely optioned rig, any pics of the entire truck?

How can you tell that’s what the axle is just by looking at it? Here’s a link to some pictures of the truck.

So the power steering setup is probably from that 1970 truck?

The power steering could be a 71 are 72 pump. They could have swapped the tank on to the pump. Who knows for sure. The over all unit is the correct type of power steering parts though.

Thanks for clearing that up. I always seem to learn something new every day here. I went a looked at a pic of my K20 spid and sure enough its got power steering listed. Maybe I was confusing power brakes and power steering. I know mine has no mention of power brakes on the spid but it definitely had them. It’s got hydraboost now.

Op, closed knuckle was last used on the ‘69 trucks.
You can tell it’s a ‘70 axle because ‘70 is a one year only with open knuckle drum brakes and red hub dials. ‘71+ are all open knuckle disk.

The pump tank is definitely post-72. Here's a diagram given to me by Marty at PowerSteering.com that shows a correct Saginaw pump for 70-72 K applications. The boxier style you have came after. How do the fittings compare?

Board member 67-72chevytrucks has been looking for a power ram assist for his 68 anniversary SWB 4X4 for a number of years. I'm not sure if he found what he's looking for, but that may be what came on the 68 4X4 trucks?

I remember that WTB thread and I did a quick search for it but didn’t have any luck. Maybe I didn’t use the right search words.

I have the whole system off my 64 SS Impala. Less the pump. It's basically the same thing. I put a normal power steering box on the 64. It's more reliable and much cleaner looking and want drag on things.
