New 71' 4x4 and need sugestions

Hi all.
This is my first post and I just picked up this 71' 4x4 for my 12 year old so we can get this baby up to par by the time she turns 16
The truck is fresh from puerto rico
I hope I did not pay too much for it, I paid $5000 with issues.
It has a inline 6 but they swapped out the 3 on the tree for a 4 on the floor so it is only 2 wheel drive for now and the transfer case was in the bed of the truck and during shipping off the island someone took the original trans and transfer case.
So I am in need of a v8 and a trans ( automatic preferred ) and a transfer case.

Question 1:
For starters I would like suggestions on what I should find for a motor and trans and transfer case to put in this.

Question 2:
it had originally a wood bed in it but it is gone and has a steel floor, I want to put the wood back in it, does the wood go over the steel flat floor or does that need to be removed , I am sure it does but just double checking.

Question 3:
It has manual steering so I need to swap that out to power steering, what should I get or look for.

Question 4 : were on line should I shop for parts, I want to swap out the steering column and I need a new gauge panel and a new grill.

I will definitely need lots more suggestions on were to go with this truck.

You can look on the parts board- if you become a member you could post a want to buy ad. Looks like a nice truck!

Re: New 71' 4x4 and need sugestions

I am considering looking for a wrecked or rust bucket truck to get motor trans and transfer case out of and maybe get the power steering pump with it as well, in the short search I did it looks like I might need a NP 205 transfer case ? what trucks came with those or what years ?
I know I can find all this in searches but I have so much to search for being new to this style truck it would be helpful for some tips or pointers to help out.

Re: New 71' 4x4 and need sugestions

I believe 69- 80 Chevy GMC used the NP205 Turbo 350 trans after that it was Turbo 400 for a few years, then at one point went to NP203 and overdrive trans. I could be incorrect.
Depends on gearing and tire size if you would need overdrive.I have a 70 with 373 gears and 33" tires so I am OK without overdrive.

Nice looking truck

Re: New 71' 4x4 and need sugestions

Looks to be a good starting point. If the spid is there there you can see the options the truck had. The spid is location on the inside of the glove glovebox door.

Thanks

Re: New 71' 4x4 and need sugestions

would a th400 tranny mated to a np205 transfercase from a 1985 1 ton fit right in ? I did find one of those for sale near me

I do not know what gearing I have yet, I will need to open it up and see unless it has a tag on it.

Also is this a c/10 truck or a K/10 ( it has custom 10 badge on it. )

Yes the Th400/205 combo will fit to any 250 or 292 inline 6 or the small blocks or big blocks.

C stands for 2wd
k stands for 4wd

To understand your vin you can look here.

Re: New 71' 4x4 and need sugestions

Any wood you get for the bed will have to be modified as your truck appears to be sitting on a blazer frame. You will have to cut the wood and strips down to fit your shortened bed.

That is a super short bed! Looks like they cut the bed in front of the rear fender. Got to be careful driving something that short on slippery roads, my blazer loves swapping ends in the snow! Nice looking truck though!

Definitely a blazer frame. Not sure if a newer model blazer or not.

Re: New 71' 4x4 and need sugestions

I saw that one a while back on craigslist, looks good in pictures, but man that dudes story was out there, I had to stop reading as my head was hurting. Ihope its a legit title with matching cab vin. I thought he vin he listed was 2wd vin hopfully just a frame swap. Just about any chevy 4x4 drive train will fit, you'll just be chopping driveshafts with the blazer, or shorten frame, whatever it is. Good luck with the project, keep focused on your end goal and don't worry to much on cost, its much more fun that way.

Re: New 71' 4x4 and need sugestions

Crew cab, thanks for those measurements.
and yes I did not know better and it is a matching vin cab and it is a ( C ) cab not a K but what is weird is it seems like a stock hole in the floor with the transfer case shifter tunnel plate, it does not appear to be a hack cut job.
Does the custom 10 badging have anything to do with what is going on ?
The truck after getting it home and looking at it closer really needs to be tore down and blasted and painted. I am wishing I would have just passed on it but my daughter likes it and thats what matters.

It looks like I have the 69-72 K5 Blazer wheel base 104"

Re: New 71' 4x4 and need sugestions

Is the tunnel hump flat or does it have bolts all the way around? The Custom 10 just few more options than just the c/10 base model. They just put a 2wd cab onto the blazer frame.

You have few options now that you know it's on a blazer frame.

1. Leave it as is, Shorten a set of steps to fix the gap between fender and bedside.
2. Cut and add a section to the frame.
3. Do a frame swap.

Thanks
