1973-1980 side molding clips

So on a 1979 c10 with the 1" side molding trim. Ive removed the bedside trim and there are two clips that look like and H. I broke them both thinking LMC had what I needed and turns out the clips they sell look nothing like the one that were on the truck, nor do LMCs work in my opinion. Ive tried searching this subjust on here, online, parts, ebay, images. With almost no luck.
I have seen on picture of the trim and hardware on another site and the clip was in the picture but I cant find these little pos things anywhere.

Re: 1973-1980 side molding clips

The H shaped pieces are for the longer upper molding with one being located at the front of the upper molding and the second located about 2/3 of the way down the same molding to the rear. These are a push style of clip. My recent experience with the LMC clips are that they are poor in construction and shouldn't be used. My push in clips were not tempered correctly and just bent without holding the molding in place. I elected to not use them and used extra tape type clips. You may not have this option if you already have the holes in the box sides. The adhesive tape that comes with the clips is unreliable and should be changed for fresh two sided tape. The clips are fine, the tape not so much. The other clip (#1 in your picture) proved to be also poorly constructed and I found the self tapping nuts over powered the stud allowing it to spin. This made removal challenging. I could not locally source the correct clips and reused original clips found from a parts truck and/or your favourite pick n pull.
The replacement clips that comes with the moldings were over all unsuitable and required either additional effort (tape replacement) or complete changeout. Go find the clips you need from a donor. Even rusty original clips would work better than the replacements.

Re: 1973-1980 side molding clips

I understand all of that. The truck was repainted 2 years ago and the tape didn't stick on the truck, so I removed the worst one on the side upper bed and I broke the two clips because I didn't care. However now those two clips are impossible to find. LMC clips are way off not even for the same truck imo.
There are some plastic clips for rockers on impalas that may work on ebay which would same me having to clear the new clips as the ones on there now all bleed rust down the paint after it rains....
I just need to find the clips for now. Yes the truck has holes and im not fixing that I just want to go back with the same clips and not some spring loaded crap clip I got from LMC.

Re: 1973-1980 side molding clips

I'll try to look this weekend. I have a whole bag of retainers for those moldings from a kit I used. They may be the same as LMC but it doesn't hurt to check. You need 2?

Re: 1973-1980 side molding clips

Yes just 2. The clips LMC sent for a 79 I see being used on pre 73s but have no clue how they would work on 73-80 trims and those clips are not seen in the pic I sent....? Why LMC sells them for 73-80?

So who has the better clips for the molding besides going to a junk yard?

Re: 1973-1980 side molding clips

I would suggest used. It seems like the aftermarket ones tend to bend. I know the used ones are new and shiny but they clean up easy and aren't hard to find

Anyone know what size hole these clips are supposed to go into?? They just seem to bend and won't really go in.
