Re: '72 gmc

Not much has happened in a few weeks....

Couple things:
1. Got the radiator back in. That allowed us to get the rest of the wiring up front done (fans, starter, etc.)

2. Started working on the front of the truck. The headlights are now wired up and installed.

Next up, heater lines, water hoses, vacuum line to brake booster and the re-install of the cold-air intake. After that I hope to get all the fluids in and start it up to test everything before the interior is installed........

Re: '72 gmc

I took awhile to figure out how to get power steering lines to work, but we got it. If I would have realized the inner fender was going to create such a problem, I would have trimmed/modified it prior to assembly.

Once the steering lines were built and installed, the cold air intake and radiator hoses went on (a 2001 Camaro upper hose fit perfect, no trimming needed).

Only thing left to do under the hood is to install a heater hose and the steering ragjoint. I think it turned out super clean (the orange wire is for the underwood light, it will be re-routed). I still hate the look of the LS engine, cant find a cover that will work....

Might get her started up later this week!

Re: '72 gmc

That looks really nice & tidy. You may need to make a cover that looks the way you want...if not, some of the early LS powered Corvettes had nice smooth covers.

I wouldn’t let the look of the engine distract you from all the hard work you put into it. You have a very very nice truck anyone would be proud to own. Awesome work!

Re: '72 gmc

Finally started her up today. Aside from a fuel line leak from a hand tightened fitting near the tank, she ran perfect.

I took a short video, but I dont know how to post links.....

Im running my Dakota Digital gauges off the computer, and you have to disconnect the ecm while you oil prime your engine off the starter so we werent 100% sure we had oil pressure. When we finally started it, the gauges read zero pressure. There was a moment of stress until I realized I had to program the gauges to look at the ecm for gauge readings. As soon as I did that, pressure popped up to 40 and the tach started reading. It was an awesome feeling.

It wasnt all perfect however, I have to pull the t-56 and reshim the slave. The clutch wasnt fully disengaging.

Re: '72 gmc

Thats awesome man! Huge relief I bet. Pretty soon you'll get to do your first ride in it and probably have a few things here and there to resolve, as most all do. I hope to be in your shoes before next summer. Thanks for posting such nice work to inspire us!

Hey man, I was looking back through your thread and have a question about post 47. How much Noico 80 mil. did you use? Amazon has a package with 36 sqft. and I'm curious how much it takes to get the coverage I see on your truck.

I ordered two of the 36 sf packages and ended up with 1/2 pack left. I went a bit overboard, I’m sure one pack will work. You dont need to cover every square inch like I did......

Re: '72 gmc

Finally got the hood and tailgate back on today. The billet hood hinges are not the easiest to adjust hood placement with.

Re: '72 gmc

I just read through your whole build. Such a nice build and you have crazy good talent and foresight.
Your build answered a question I have been pondering, being how the earlier side trim looks with the later GMC grill and hood. Perfect!

Re: '72 gmc

Some good news today. I don't think I need to pull the T-56 to shim the slave.

When I ordered the transmission (and the clutch, slave, etc), I was told that the GM slave cylinder Im using does not need shims. I have never installed a transmission/clutch/slave before so I wasn't sure I was doing everything correctly. Everything I read on the internet talks about shimming the slave to the proper tolerances.

When we started the truck (it was still on jacks), it wasn't "fluid" into gear and as soon as it went into 1st, the wheels started rolling with the clutch pedal floored. Therefore, I assumed there wasn't enough throw for the clutch to fully disengage.

When I called the vendor (very helpful) he immediately said that I must still have air in the line. Which I now believe to be the case.

Hint to future T-56 installations: order the remote bleeder valve. The GM located bleeder valve for these trannys is impossibly stupid and difficult to bleed. The brake fluid goes everywhere.

Re: '72 gmc

Started the interior. Build a panel for the back wall and laminated 4 layers to curve the corners.

Re: '72 gmc

Had carpet installed on the back. Im having a full vinyl interior headliner over the foam. Took an aspect of the original headliner and installed a suede insert (that will match the seats) in that spot. Then the chrome trim was wrapped in the vinyl. I think it looks great!

The carpet is only loosely laid in right now to check fit. Its from stock interiors and fits great. I went with the ultra-plush option.

Re: '72 gmc

Then I bolted in the seats and console. I think Im going to wait a bit to install the TMI door panels. They use 3M tape to secure the top of the panel and with all the power windows, etc., I want to make sure I don't have any tweaks to make before they go on.
