well a diesel without od and 410 gears runs what 70 mph wide open? not something id want since you would be going everywhere wide open but if he doesnt drive over 55 prob be fine.

Had a 72 GMC 3/4 ton on the road a number of years ago. Only time I checked mileage was on a hauling trip. Truck had a 402/TH400 and either 4.10's or 4.56's. It ran at 3000@ 60mph. Anyway with a uhaul trailer and a 57 Olds 2 door going up and a 57 Olds wagon on the way back (most of the route was on US 30 in Pennsylvania) I got 7MPG. Didn't think it was too bad considering the weight I was hauling and the terrain. Now I also have a 93 xcab K2500 6.5/4L80E/4.10s that gets mid teens and a 96 K2500 Burb, 6.5/4L80E/3.73s took on an 800+ mile trip, 24MPG.

i dont know about where you are but here diesel is 70 cents more a gallon, kinda negates another 5 mpg

I can get 15mpg out of either of my trucks, but I gotta drive like I got an egg under my foot and cruise at 55-60. Since that ain't no fun I usually get more like 11-12.

my diesel still is cheaper to drive though than the gas truck like it.

yeah but a cummins 7.3 psd any idi or a 04 up duramax doesnt really break too easy. 300-400k is a common thing with all of them and usually make it there with only minor maintance. only good thing i can say about my 04 is the engine. ive not done anything to it or the trans and its been beat to death. that said i wouldnt want a diesel with a th400 or the 6.2/6.5 engines. but i agree its not that much difference in cost to run and the diesel engine is going to cost more unless you get a pos diesel that no one wants. 2-4k used is what one of the good diesels would run to buy. if you work the truck like a dog and pull huge trailers the diesel would be perfect or you wanting super fast truck then its also a good idea( mine digs into the 13s with just exhaust and a tuner). if you just want a truck to drive haul a load of lumber or a 4 wheeler every once in while no way id want a diesel. also a diesel isnt good offroad.
