Welcome, and nice truck! You are definitely not starting at zero. Good luck on your build. Patience is a virtue. Looks like you're off to a good start, A stroker will get them wheels moving.

Destruction has begun. Sorry for the poor lighting.

First find: a hidden license plate behind the custom bumper.

Looks like a good solid specimen to start with. The crankshaft in the rotating assembly picture is not the correct shaft for a one-piece main seal. May be just a generic picture, but make sure they give you the correct crankshaft. The output flange should be round without counterweights cast in so the seal can slip over it.

I wish I had your knowledge. I'm glad that I know it's a cam shaft. The picture I found on the summit website, it's not the one the machine shop is using. Please do let me know any time you see me making an error. I'm here to learn and greatly appreciate anyone looking out for me.

Today I found an electrical cord coming out of the engine. First time seeing this. Any thoughts?

It must be a plug-in hybrid.

It's the plug for a block heater, goes in place of a freeze plug.

I'll have to look that up. I think I've heard of it before.

Oh and Semper Fi! If you need parts shoot me a message, I have some laying around, mostly small block parts. Some of them you can have for free just pay shipping.

A block heater, for those cold lonely nights when you and your truck are alone. Thank you hotroddin for letting me know what it is. I don't think I'm going to plan on putting one on my new engine. Seems like I could install one at a later time if necessary.

Re: 1972 K10 Disabled Veteran First Build

It's no problem, they won't be going anywhere. According to the wife I'm a "hoarder"... I just see it as good stuff I can use later or keep as a back up. Yeah you can install the block heater later if you end up needing it, put it in like a freeze plug.

Re: 1972 K10 Disabled Veteran First Build

Found some previous alterations by the previous owner. Has too much been cut off the fenders for me to use again? Anything else missing? I have to grind off the weld to get the panel off. Thankfully I caught it before I bent anything.

Re: 1972 K10 Disabled Veteran First Build

You can get patch panels for that

Although they are not cheap ($55) and the quality of some patches is very poor in my experience. Are you going to be using the stock bumper?

I'm thinking of trying to make my own bumper for it. Think I could hide it if I did? Or should I try to make it original? Guess I should try to find pictures of what it should look like.

Re: 1972 K10 Disabled Veteran First Build

I meant to post this earlier but kept forgetting. The truck was built in Fremont seven years before I was born. What's interesting to me is that I grew up in Milpitas and San Jose and use to drive by the old plant where the truck was built. I went to school in Fremont and after the Marines I was hired by Fremont PD.

I wouldn't worry about original unless your planning on doing a correct restoration. I'm sure you could make a nice wrap around bumper that would blend right in. Only thing that matters in the end is what you want to end up with and how much you want to spend.
