Need tips on painting hood
If painting body parts in the position they are installed, - what's the best way to paint hood ? It just seems almost impossible to reach across entire hood for a continual swipe. Suggestions? It sure would be a lot easier to just lean it up against the wall !

Re: Need tips on painting hood
If it's on a rack as it is on the truck a few feet off the ground it's not hard to reach across. You paint it with lengthwise passes, it's not hard.
What color are you painting it? Brian

Re: Need tips on painting hood
Painting eastwoods' single stage urathane quarter mile candy red. Devilbiss flg-4 finishline gun. Approx. 20-25 lbs. Of air. I'm down to hood and bed. Cab all done and reassembled. Changing from steel floor to wood. Came out pretty good. I think i have a tendency of being to far away with the gun. So it ends up with to much orange peel. I sanded through paint and will have to repaint one door. Is it possible to "touch up" single stage or do u just repaint whole "panel" ? To close with gun and u run it, to far away and its orange peel city ! Big difference between 12 in. Away and 6 in. Away. I'm gonna try 6-8 in. Away with less air. Obviously not a ton of experience here. 3-4 cars but over yrs. So u forget half of what u learned by the time u do another one.

Re: Need tips on painting hood
If you have painted the cab already, it's not an issue as I was going to point out how colors can be different from part to part when painted in pieces. With the solid color as long as it's fully covered this isn't an issue. Nut with metallics a little different distance or pressure can change the color BIG TIME.
It depends on where you are spotting on a part, say at the top of the door where you can back tape a body line at the bottom of the window, you could just paint the top. But something like in the big panel that makes up the door skin, nope, did it plenty when I could back in the day, it is VERY difficult and not worth it, just repaint the whole thing. Brian

Re: Need tips on painting hood
12 inches away is along ways. Measure off 6 inches on a mixing stick and tape it to your gun, make some dummy passes with it to get a feel for where you should be from the panel.
If you lessen your air you will have more runs. |

Re: Need tips on painting hood
Get back to basics. Slow down, get closer than 12" but maybe you should/could spray a crash panel before you paint your truck to get the hang of it.
