Re: Custom Camper Club

Anyone have a '65 version? A Custom Camper was essentially a package of options that were available earlier from Chevy, but were finally grouped together when the camper boom took off in the mid 60's. So you can actually build a Custom Camper if you fetch up all these options, and the name plate of course, to your '65 or '66 C 20. There were no SPIDS in '65 and most SPIDS on '66's have fallen off a long time ago. A member cru zn 29 has beautifully restored to stock '65 C 20 that has the right bones for the making of a rare '65 Custom Camper. Interestingly, the Custom Camper option had no requirements for the powertrain, so even a standard small 6 cylinder 3 speed could have been a Custom Camper, but it would not be a wise choice for camper hauling.

Re: Custom Camper Club

appx . 1500 cc were built in 65, the name badges are hard to come by, since it was only used one 1/2 year production. I think chevy came out with the 327 in april on 65 for these trucks , but no turbo 400 in 65

That was pretty good, that ford musta had one heck of a door check for it to stay in that open position up on it's side... Chevy's Rule...

Re: Custom Camper Club

I have been busy joining this club. I Bought 2 66 custom campers in the last few weeks. Both were 327/ th 400 trucks unfortunately the correct 327 has been replaced with a 63 impala 283 in one truck. The other truck has the correct coded motor. Both trucks are ruff but will restore into a nice factory custom camper with all the options. I look forward to more custom camper info.

Re: Custom Camper Club

Hello, new to the forum, just bought this a couple weeks ago and thought I'd share it. I hear these Custom Campers are kind of rare.
This is a '66, one owner, 62000 miles, 327, three speed, column shift, that was purchased new in the same home town I live in at an old Chevrolet dealership that has since closed. The truck still has the dealership badges on both sides.
Gonna keep it original looking, even the split rims with a spare.

Re: Custom Camper Club

That's a great looking truck. Is that the original paint or has it had a repaint. I need to find me a Custom Camper or maybe a set of 65 CC emblems.

Hope I don't upset this thread but not too many opportunities to show off my tear-drop so here it is. Looks good behind my 63 step-side too

Thanks, think the paint is original with a lot of small touch-ups all over.

Re: Custom Camper Club

My biggest gripe about the Custom Camper package is that Chevy didn't automatically include the 4.10 ratio. Most came with the standard 4.56 ratio used on standard C 20's with 250 6's. Another bummer was the Eaton never became available in an even higher ratio, say 3.54 or 3.73 in the '67-'72 years. There has been talk on this site a special 3.90 ratio became available on C 20's, GM or aftermarket, but I have never seen any official documentation on it.

Re: Custom Camper Club

Not Mine:
I had posted this the other day under Craigslist finds but thought it might be of interest here too.
1965 C20, $5000. Non original motor but has 4 speed.
Custom Camper badge, chrome horn ring and chrome instrument knobs.
Looks like a solid truck.
Could be a legit Custom Camper.

Thanks for posting. I agree looks solid, indeed a C.C. and a reasonable price, worth investigating! Interesting to see if it was a originally a West Coast truck that got shipped to the Mid West. Interior looks clean, very little wear on the steering wheel and original seat are a big plus.

Re: Custom Camper Club

Here's a couple of "pre-restoration" pics of our CC. Very original, all factory power & AC. Matching numbers on the 327. Have the original data plate too. She just needs some TLC... joined the CC club a while back but don't see much activity???

Re: Custom Camper Club

Once again, all the beautiful trucks around here and I'm embarrassed to post a pic of my old man. Thanks for posting the link to the funny video. Silly, but entertaining.
that one in Detroit seems to have similar upholstery to the remnants of mine. The interior and horn ring are fancier though.

Cool truck, Chevy1966. Would like to see it once you've cleaned it up. Yep, not a lot of activity on the Custom Camper page lately.

Re: Custom Camper Club

I picked up a 1966 C20 Custom Camper a couple years ago and it was an original 327/4 speed truck (327 replaced with a 350 crate motor sometime in the past). It has the stock Eaton rear axle with 3:90 gears.
