any new duramax swap info for 67-72 c20 or c30

have a 71 c20 suburban with low miles, 38k. debating a 402/4l80e original looking or a 06-07 duramax/allison swap. the truck is stock and clean, plan on using it as a shop/family car to tow more 67-72s home. it ia also being lowered 6/7"s. any info would be greatly appreciated. thanks, glen

First off, beautiful Suburban! I vote for the Duramax/Allison combo. The Duramax truck I had would pull anything I hooked to it like it wasnt there. That would absolutely make that truck! Hope to see a build soon, and if it looks like your other build I know it will be amazing!

Re: any new duramax swap info for 67-72 c20 or c30

I am by no means an expert on this, but from things I've read in the past it would be a real PITA to put a Duramax combo in one of these trucks and if you're dead set on running a diesel your best bet by far is to get a Cummins and put that in as the swap is much much easier. I have heard the option of taking the 67-72 body and putting it on a factory Duramax frame but I don't think I've actually seen that done anywhere.

Again I am no expert and don't have any direct experience doing any one of these swaps but that's just the gist I've gotten from things I've read on here and other places.

Re: any new duramax swap info for 67-72 c20 or c30

PPE did one in a 70 2wd. Here is their website. They have all the stand alone controllers you will need to make it happen. A google search will bring up a bunch of articles on their pickup as it was in Diesel Power mag and others. Your best bet, and probably the cheapest, would be to find a wrecked duramax to pull the engine/tranny out of so you will have everything there.

EDIT: Here is the DP mag article.

Beautiful suburban! Just curious, but why would you lower it so much if you want to use it as a tow vehicle?

Very nice suburban! Good luck with the swap, it will be a lot of work but awesome when completed!

Re: any new duramax swap info for 67-72 c20 or c30

My father has a Dmax and he'll never go with gas again, when we pull trailers we forget the things are behind us and these are dump trailers, enclosed trailer, and flat bed car trailers loaded down not some 8ft by 10ft quad trailer. I want to see this swap so go for it

found a core. looks to big for a lowered 2wd. may shelve it for a 4x4 with 4" lift and 33s

Just curious, but why go to the trouble to lower it if it will be a tow vehicle?

Not sure why a couple people think lowered trucks can't tow. Do it

Re: any new duramax swap info for 67-72 c20 or c30

Ok I will be the first to say it. 6.0 LS bored and stroked to 408. Small cam. This combo would pull well and take 300-400? pounds off the sub compared to the Duramax? With the 4l80E 3.73 or 4.10 gears?
