Orange Highlander rescue

I wanted to share some of the pictures of the Orange Highlander I recently found. The 90 year old, 2nd owner bought 1985. He used the Blazer for 15 years to go elk hunting here in Colorado. After sitting for 18 years, It took 3 hours to air up all the tires, install a new battery, bypass the gas tank, top off all the fluids and get the Blazer running well enough to load on to my trailer.

Re: Orange Highlander rescue

As evident by the pictures the owner has some hoarding tendencies. When I tried to move the bottles of oil off the hood he got very agitated. Instead of pushing the issue, I stopped and allowed him two weeks to empty the hoard from outside and inside the Blazer. After the two weeks there was still a 40gallon container of trash left inside left to clear. I was convinced that very old windshield wiper since 1985 was in it.

Re: Orange Highlander rescue

It cleaned up well. The leveling mats were in tact and the floors were better than expected. After dropping the gas tank, cleaning it and the fuel lines, it went through two inline filters and two in carb filters. I changed the engine oil and filter. Put new AC Delco plug in it too. It now runs strong like you would expect a 63k mile 350ci V8 would.

Re: Orange Highlander rescue

It seems Chevrolet dealers sold a ton of 1969-1972 K5 Blazer in Colorado.

Re: Orange Highlander rescue

You sure it’s an original highlander? I don’t see the code on the spid. Am I missing it? I love the color combo. I’ve always been partial to the red orange.

I'm betting the 1st owner installed those radio shack looking speakers in the rear in the 70's. Nice Blazer, cleaned up good.

Bottom right rpo - custom trim combination. SPID is typical for Flint built Highlanders as these are the promotion package trucks and seem to be built toward in the latter half of the production year. It’s the St Louis built k5s that have SPIDs that call out Highlander.

There’s a Flint built “hidden” Highlander on eBay now.

Re: Orange Highlander rescue

It’s interesting since mine has both the custom trim code and the (1YG810 Special Promotional) code. I believed the trim code meant it had the lower moulding the length of the truck. It’s also a Flint build. Is this thought wrong and they both mean Highlander?

You are correct, I’m wrong on the promo package.

The rpo 686 here denotes orange plaid no promo package. St Louis would have Highlander as the descriptor whereas Flint used Custom Trim.

Here’s a St Louis equivalent:

Re: Orange Highlander rescue

It just seems weird that this doesn’t have the code but has every other sign of being a Highlander. Wouldn’t it say parchment interior since it has all the interior but the Highlander was added? It would seem like a lot of effort for the time to make it a Highlander since it was probably before people figured out the rarity of the option.

The Blazer that is the subject of this thread is a Flint assembled Highlander no question. Its SPID lists rpo 686: the interior Trim code for Orange Highlander Plaid - see the Highlander rpos on this GM chart below. If you look at the example SPID from the orange St. Louis Highlander above you’ll see the rpo is also 686.

Re: Orange Highlander rescue

The 686 is the color code but not the option code for Highlander. But I do believe it must be there to be a Highlander which is why it’s confusing. The blazer Highlander option had 1YG followed by 610, 710, 810 depending on the level of Highlander. I’ve never seen a Highlander without the special promotional code on the spid. It’s just an oddity.

Post #63 shows similar option but has the special promotional code.

Re: Orange Highlander rescue

For K5s? It’s the plaid interior that makes a K5 Highlander and had to be ordered on top of z84 Rpo for CST as spelled out on chart above. I don’t think there is one SPID for any K5 Highlander on the dedicated SPID thread that has YG listed: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=635033 My Highlander doesn’t. Maybe no promo package Highlander k5s like the pickups?

Edit: I looked at the promo package brochure and there’s no mention of Blazers so maybe no bundled YG package like a pickup? Here’s same brochure: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...36&postcount=1

Wrong again, there are a few promos buried in there with YG...some I posted. I’m losing it

Re: Orange Highlander rescue

There’s no single option number listed for Highlander plaid interior package, it’s the rpo for the color of plaid. See description under Trim just below V76 tow hook option.

I would have loved to but I'm neck deep in 2 other 72 CST Blazers and a 71 Cheyenne short bed. The new owner in Iowa is restoring a green CST Blazer I helped him with last year and when it's done he'll restore this Highlander.
