Post AMC Pacer or Volarie/Aspen IFS's

Anybody got an opinion on the "bolt-on" aspect of IFS's.??? I have seen some articles on Pacer being toted as a "bolt-on" and also Volarie/Aspen, and even '70's Chevy and GMC front suspensions being talked about as a bolt-on for 55-59 frames???

It might. The article on the Pacer IFS I read said that the front frame rails are the same width from early 50's to late 50's?
Can anyone confirm this?

I don't know about the Pacer but I have heard of the '73 and up Chevy truck front end being used on '60 and up models up to '72, and here they are using it on '47 to '55, so it would probably work on late '55 to '59s too.... starting to see an idea here for the old Burb....I like the idea of using Chevy truck parts, instead of some old Pinto or Pacer or Mustang II or other questionable piece of......... non Chevy stuff!!!

Alright, I like the idea of using GM on GM.

But we need to find proof that the mid 70's crossmember is the way to go. Would like to get my '57 truck lower to the ground. I would assume there are drop kits for mid 70's trucks right? So we just need to hear from someone who has done this for late 55's thru 59's. I hope someone reads this and responds with the details. That is why I started this post. KEEP POSTING Y'ALL!

A few guys have installed a 73 and up IFS on 47 to 55 trucks. Looks a little dumb with the wheels sticking out beyond the fenders. That also means you can't lower it.Winds up being a big pain in the ass, shortening and rewelding control arms to reduce the width. If you really must have a super low IFs on a beam axle truck, One of the weld on Stang kits is the easiest way to go from what I hear.Plus you keep the original frame, with all its mounts.

so why couldnt you narrow the engine cradle by cutting it doen the middle and cutting out certain amount then rewelding it back together and then use different offset wheels- say... the G10 wheels ?
but then the centerlink wouldnt work unless you cut and shortened it also, the same amount, but is easy if you can find a pipe or tube that will slip over the middle area of the centerlink to band-aid the bar back together. welder of course..

too bad there wasnt some pics of some 47-55 and 55-59 chassies to show widths and dimensions, Im curious now, the only reason why I have lack of interest in the pre-60 frames is because its too damn hard to get IFS discs on them, but if we can do it with 71-up front, then hmmmm.........

also, I though 63-up was the split line ? or is that just the body, and the frames actually are same 60-up ? I know the 12 bolt rear axle started in 64, and the body must have changed in late 62 for the 63 model year.

why is this so complicated to keep track of ?

I know where i can locally pick up a really nice un-modified un restored '47-'55 3/4 ton pickup with no engine in it for a good deal, but I lost interest because of the crappy suspension that is too hard to swap out. But if theres an easier way to get disc IFS under it then.,,,,
hmm..... that would be a sweet truck with some paint put on it... I never used to like anytihng older than 67, I still dont like the 63-66 trucks body style, but older than that hmm...not bad,..,

ok, getting off soap box

good luck rico
