removing dash 1953 chevy

I may be taking on the monumental task of removing the complete dash on my 53. my understanding is that there at a couple bolts and many (not sure how many) spot welds. the original dash will not be reused. if I have cut it a little I can. if I do cut it will I still need to drill out the spot welds to install the replacement dash? when I install the replacement dash will I need to spot weld it in place of is there another way? I'm searching for other threads about this but so far have come up empty.

Read it, it explains exactly what you need to remove that dash just as if it were bolted in.

I have a dash which was removed from a '52 truck, and it was cut on the cowl side of the seam and the windshield side of that seam. I don't know what a replacement dash looks like or how it would attach to compare. Whomever removed it had no problem with cutting the outer side of the spot welds.

that's about what I expected. ive done some welding but these will be my first spot weld removals. how many spot welds are there? ive heard from 25 to 105

Hey evilokc, I didn't take out my dash, but I did remove most of it and installed a new dash kit.

If you have a wire cup brush to go on your angle grinder you can run it along the spot weld area to clean things off and show the spot welds.

Another way if you aren't going to save the dash as a complete unit is cut the dash as close as you can to the spot welds without hitting the metal under the spot welds and then take a hammer and chisel or air chisel and pop the strip that is left off. Once you get a few spot welds popped loose you just roll the strip back and keep popping welds and rolling the strip .
