Best Paint Match for 1972 Saddle Interior

Anyone have experience re painting door panels, sun visors, etc for a 1972 with saddle interior? Mine need some love and I want the color to stay true to factory. I got new arm rests but they appear to be lighter in color so I can't match them. Pic for reference, not my truck

Re: Best Paint Match for 1972 Saddle Interior

The guy who is doing my truck is having paint mixed to match the vinyl on my seats and door panels. He will be painting the dash pad and console to match the seats. I would assume that he went to an automotive paint supply store. I do know that he took a piece of the vinyl so they could color match. Hope this helps someone.

Re: Best Paint Match for 1972 Saddle Interior

I had a thread on this last week and learned nothing. I tried SEM Camel, which is closer than their Saddle. Too light. I'm going to have my paint shop mix something up. I looked at Color Bond LVP, but saw nothing I'd be sure would match. Classic Industries sells OER paint that supposedly matches, but they don't even show a sample

I just came up with this:

Here is the SEM Camel compared to original '72 panel

Re: Best Paint Match for 1972 Saddle Interior

I ordered some of that. We''ll see how that works.

Jegs sells that OER paint, too. Everywhere I looked, including searching for their color charts, I found no samples. Do they really get people buying that stuff based soley on the name of the color. As far as I'm concerned, with no samples to view they don't exist as an option.

That looks a lot closer then most I have seen. I saw this link in the ad below, looks like it may be close as well. Or just a touch too dark? Kinda hard withouth spraying them out side by side

Re: Best Paint Match for 1972 Saddle Interior

I am getting ready to go to my paint store and have him mix up a color match but I wanted to verify first, what all paints the same color? I assume center console, door panels, seat backs, sun visors, and rear wheel tub panels go a darker saddle? My steering column is original paint but it doesn't really match anything, I have a new dash pad but it doesn't match anything, and I have new arm rests but they don't match anything either.

I think I am going to paint the dash pad to match the door panels and let the arm rests match the steering column and wheel with the lighter color. I just want to get an idea of what was factory, any help would be appreciated.

Re: Best Paint Match for 1972 Saddle Interior

Hmmm... I must have shown the pictures in the other thread and not here. I bought that paint Andrew shows on Ebay. Still not a match, but good enough for my temporary door panels with speakers. It's pretty acceptable. Seems to be more straight brown with saddle having a touch of red in it. When I restore the truck I will be having the dye mixed to match

Re: Best Paint Match for 1972 Saddle Interior

Another question on this subject, if I go to the local paint shop and have a color match done, what color am I matching and where does it apply? It appears that the arm rests are definitely a different shade of saddle then the door panels. Is everything else the same? This is the list of items I would consider painting to "restore" my interior:

Dash pad
Sun visors
Steering column
Door panels
Arm rests
Bucket seat backs
Center console

My wild guess would be dash pad is a completely different shade (matching the dash paint color, closer to a sandalwood color), sun visors match the door panels, steering column matches the steering wheel (completely different shade but lighter like the dash pad), door panels match seat backs, center console, and sun visors (the dark saddle we are talking about above).

Anyone want to chime in, is this close at all or am I way off?

Re: Best Paint Match for 1972 Saddle Interior

Just happened to bump into this thread and I have been dealing with trying to match "Saddle" for the better part of this year! I've gone through many different saddle paints with some being close, but looking like milk chocolate - or fudge - or some other variant of a chocolate, but never really "Saddle". I was trying marine based spray paint, actual saddle making spray paint. Man -
I ran Google and FedEx ragged trying so many! I finally tried one from a Corvette site that has turned out to be really close to my original Saddle. It is a little dull as a base coat, but put a light coat of clear on it and it's amazing how it comes to life and could pass for stock Saddle color!
Here are some shots of a few pieces with just the base coat on them and then with the clear coat on -

Here is a seatbelt bolt sock and the steering wheel I rehab'd. Only the horn cap has a coat of clear on and you can see how it is much more "Saddle" than the wheel without clear.

Wow that looks great! Any comparisons to a factory saddle finish? Found that stuff pretty easily, $20 a can isn't bad. What clear did you use?

Re: Best Paint Match for 1972 Saddle Interior

Well - we all know how the light in pictures can change the look of things. But here is the original Saddle door panel. The arm rest is one from the 2nd or 3rd row bench seats (this is for a Suburban) and the seat belt sock for comparison. In person it is dam near identical. And the clear was one that i got from one of the Touch-Up auto paint stores on line (sorry, not close to the garage).

Yea that is a pretty darn good match. I believe the 69-71 saddle is lighter than the darker 72 only color. Now I'm curious if the corvette website has a darker saddle color match

I wonder if 72 corvette Saddle interior is the same a 72 pickup Saddle interior. There are plenty of paint match vinyl dyes for Corvette interiors, I may to order a can and see.

I’m gonna bring this thread back from the dead. Anyone use this OER Dark Saddle paint yet? How is the match to Saddle or Dark Saddle?

Re: Best Paint Match for 1972 Saddle Interior

I recently had a set of seat belts restored for my 72 K20, and the color they used on the buckle covers was an exact match to the backs of the door panels, (never exposed to sun). Funny, just before you posted on this thread, I called them and asked for information on the paint they used. They said they would get back to me on Monday.

I’m interested in how good the OER paint matches. Please post once you try it.

Re: Best Paint Match for 1972 Saddle Interior

Here’s what I found. First off the cap color does not indicate the paint color. I thought it was a Fawn or taupe like color so shook and did a test spray and was happy to see it was a brown/Saddle color. Secondly, do not follow the instructions! Says “Use 2 inches away from surface”. I think it should read “12 inches away”. I was using black panels, visors, visor clips and black new rear arm rests for a 72 Blazer. Here’s the results...

The new arm rests are a Counterpart product. My question is does anyone have OER 1972 Saddle arm rests. Last I saw they were on back order. Curious if their arm rests would be a better color match?

I’d go with the armrests as is. I don’t have good example photos but I suspect there was always a slight shade mismatch between the armrest and panel color.

Re: Best Paint Match for 1972 Saddle Interior

The problem I see with most of these dyes is they are flat. That is the look we have these days with custom leather interiors (nubuck), but these vinyl interiors had a gloss to them. That OER stuff looks way wrong solely from the lack of sheen.

71/72 are the same shade, darker than the 69/70.

71/72 are the same shade, darker than the 69/70.
Sheen is an easy fix with satin or semigloss rattle can clear coat. I’m more concerned with color. The Countrrpart arm rests are lighter and have more red in them. That’s why I’m wondering about the OER arm rests.
